Fluffy Toilet Paper Said to Be Worse for Environment Than Hummers

Friday , February 27, 2009

That super-soft toilet paper you're fond of using? It's an ecological disaster, environmentalists say.

Millions of trees are harvested throughout the Americas – including rare old-growth forests in Canada – to sustain the United States’ obsession with quilted, ultra-soft, multi-ply toilet paper, the New York Times reported.

Although toilet paper manufacturers could produce products from recycled materials at a similar cost, the newspaper reported, the fiber taken from standing trees are necessary to help give the tissue its fluffy feel.

“No forest of any kind should be used to make toilet paper,” said Dr. Allen Hershkowitz, a senior scientist and waste expert with the Natural Resource Defense Council told the Times.

You know, that might be the economic redemption of the media. They can cut a lot of jobs and still sell papers. Just sell them blank, market them as buttwipe. Keep the logos and that nice motto, All the news that’s fit to print.

This guy is either an idiot or purposely trying to sensationalize a non-issue.

He said, ""Making toilet paper from virgin wood is a lot worse than driving Hummers in terms of global warming pollution.” (emphasis added)

This guy is implying that toilet paper comes from 'noble virgin forests'. Toilet paper comes from 'virgin paper', which simply means that it comes from a chipped wood product -vs- recycled product.

Most chipped wood products, toilet paper, printer paper, newspaper, etc, comes from the 'noble' loblolly pine trees which a large portion of are grown on massive tree farms. Anybody who has traveled through southeast Georgia, eastern North and South Carolina knows the extent of those tree farms.

60% of all wood products used in the US, including toilet paper, comes from the 13 Southern states and a lot of this 60% of harvested wood comes from tree farms.

Dr. Hershkowitz proves once again that education and intelligence can be mutually exclusive.

Mybe their use of the recycled stuff is why they suffer from the "red ass" all the time.

These Greenies have destroyed CA and other States and won’t be happy until we are all broke trying to meet their unreasonable goals. Whatever happened to risk versus benefit when making decisions for the Country?

HOAX.
Does anyone remember the great toilet paper shortage started by Johnny Carson?
Carson, on the Tonight Show and as a joke, said that there was a shortage of toilet paper. Worried about running out, everyone ran to the store and stripped the store shelves bare of TP. This fake shortage lasted for weeks.

I had the privelege of using some one-ply Scott tissue from the 50s, and it was miserable stuff. I think 320 grit would have been an improvement.

Rinse and reuse. Imagine how many trees you'll save.

Lets put these dopes out in the wilderness for several days without necessities and see how they like not having toilet paper, soap, etc.

I'm afraid that many of them wouldn't notice a difference. They already don't use any of that stuff.

I intend to incorporate this into my "Pave the Rainforest" campaign. People don't realize the countless uses to which trees may be put. So far I've focused on things like furniture and firewood, but this is certainly another common use I'm sure most folks don't even consider.

One more reason I say "Run, forest, run!"

Yup, and some of that old toilet paper was hard and slick, It didn’t clean you well, it smeared things really thin so it would dry faster.........

...comes from the 'noble' loblolly pine trees which a large portion of are grown on massive tree farms. Anybody who has traveled through southeast Georgia, eastern North and South Carolina knows the extent of those tree farms.

I lived next to one for a while. They harvested on a 20 year cycle.

They clear-cut 1/20th of the 180,000 acres every year. Then, they let the land lay for a year.

One day a BIGGG dozer comes along, towing a roller with big teeth, mulching the stumps, and all else. After laying for a second year, they repeat that process. Back and forth, they mince everything and churn the soil.

Another year passes, and one day, the road is lined with school buses, early in the day. All day long, lines of folk, with bag of seedlings, and a "planting stick", walk abreast, lancing the soil with roots and stems.

Wait 20 years, and repeat!

My plumber buddy refers to Charmin ("don't squeeze the Charmin") as 'The Plumber's Friend'

Charmin and other fluffies don't get along with our septic.

I hate that old waxed single sheet toilet paper. It is useless;toilet paper needs some absorbency to do the job.
