Detroit Lions defensive end Corey Smith and Oakland Raiders linebacker Marquis Cooper were among four boaters missing Sunday off Florida's Gulf Coast, the Coast Guard and Smith's agent said.
Smith and Cooper were on a 21-foot vessel that left Clearwater Pass on Saturday morning for a fishing trip and did not return as expected, the Coast Guard said Sunday. Crews used a helicopter and a 47-foot boat to search a 750-square mile area west of Clearwater Pass on Sunday

Where is John Galt?
Being macho in bad weather is more stupid than anything else.
Those of us in the fishing business live and die by the weather. Not to take it into consideration along with a zillion other variables is foolhardy.
I have a feeling this could be a case of only knowing enough to start, run and stop the boat but ignorant to the ways of the ocean....I cannot imagine how scary this is for all involved.....
We live in the area, and my guys (hubby and son) go out a lot. Yesterday AM wasn’t too bad, a short trip would have been okay, but they went out 50 miles...this front has come through in the meantime and the wind has been awful. They were only in a 21 footer, yikes!
Rich people and their toys. Just like JFK Jr, John Denver and countless others. They lack the proper training and experience to operate their craft. I wonder if a mayday call was given to the cost guard?
NJL players. Now we care.
NFL. Sorry.
Oh, this is not good. I know the seas off of our coast have not been good. I sure wouldn’t have gone out. And I’ve been in some rough ones in a bigger boat than 21 ft. (Seas were supposed to be good all day and unexpectedly roughed up later. Soon as it started we headed back in and a good thing, too!)
What size boat and who is driving it will make a big difference. I used to use that ramp.
That’s okay, I’m surprised my comments are legible, I’m wearing just one contact lens, so even my reader glasses don’t really help.
All is lost.
only knowing enough to start, run and stop the boat but ignorant to the ways of the ocean.
Did someone say the missing were football players???
It happens to poor people and their toys too, it just doesn’t usually make the news unless it is a celebrity.
50 miles, if that really happened,is moronic.
weather info is so good today there are few excuses.
I have always found the ocean vast and scary. I’m only comfortable far away from shore if I’m on something like a cruise ship.
21 foot boat? I’d be scared to be more than a few hundred yards away from shore.
“among four boaters missing.”
I guess the other two “boaters missing” don’t rate more than barely a mention, not being NFL players.
I have always found the ocean vast and scary. Im only comfortable far away from shore if Im on something like solid ground.
