Bristol Palin breaks up with fiance Levi Johnston
Herald Sun ^ | 12 March 2009

SARAH Palin's teenage Bristol has broken off her engagement to Levi Johnston two months after the birth of their child.

The 18-year-old daughter of the Alaskan Governor told the Associated Press (AP) she was "devastated" by the split.

"Unfortunately, my family has seen many people say and do many things to 'cash in' on the Palin name," she said in a statement.

"Sometimes that greed clouds good judgment and the truth."

Mr Johnston, 19, told AP the pair had mutually decided to end their relationship.

Bristol Palin's pregnancy was announced last summer days after her mother was named John McCain's running mate on the Republican presidential ticket.

SPeaking of Ann, I’m wondering why she never got married and had kids....it’s the kind of thing she’s preaching about isn’t it?

Two teenagers broke up under immense media/dem pressure to do so.

I think it was the other way around. I think they were under pressure to get married.

I don't think Levi had any intention of marrying her in the first place. If he had morals he would have married her soon after hearing she was pregnant. At least that's how it was done in my day. Not waiting months until after the baby was born.

My sister had a baby at 20. She did not marry the boys father. She bought her house at age 23. She now owns two house, both valued at 350k. The baby is now 26 with a BA from Case.

Your sister is not the norm with unwed mothers. The vast majority end up on public assistance of some type and go into further bad relationships.

Is Bristol working? Or is she just being a total slug.

According to the tabloid article she has basically dropped out of school or is not attending classes on a regular basis-faulty attendance.

I’m a woman, and I didn’t. Some do, some don’t. I’m sorry, but we need to teach our girls that it’s THAT important. Some will still make mistakes, that’s life, however the rate of unwed mothers and divorces should tell us that something is dreadfully wrong. I’m tired of hearing that people can’t control themselves. They can, and they would if they felt the should or needed to.

I’m certainly not piling on (altho I predicted someone would say we were). Listen, you can like Palin, and think she would be great and STILL see that her daughter’s unwed pregnancy is not a thing to celebrate. If you think inner city girls should not be having babies out of wedlock, you can’t then turn around and say it’s ok because we like her Mom. I wish her well, and I think that child will be fine because of the family support system, however I think it has done some harm (unfortunately) to her Mom’s career. It may not be a fatal blow, but it’s awfully hard to preach abstinence education when your own daughter did not practice it. This is NOT a Palin bash, it’s the cold hard facts. And I’m not a troll.

Nice, no job, living with mom...AND staying ignorant. That will be great ammunition in 2012.

While I agree that adoption is an option that is not considered in the high regard it should be, I don’t think we can say that the Bristol’s baby has been dragged into a dysfunctional mess. They seem to be a pretty normal family.

I agree. I never understand that someone could kill their baby but they just couldn’t give it up for adoption. I’m not sure exactly what that says about our culture, but it’s bad. It makes me think of the mother in the story where Solomon tells 2 mothers who both claim a baby as theirs, that he will cut the baby in half. The real mother steps forward and says no, please give the baby to the other woman rather than kill it. That’s how mothers are supposed to be.

That's right. We don't know. And we shouldn't. That same respect should be shown to all politicians' children and grandchildren.

When a teenager has a kid out of wedlock, it is a public problem and not just a private problem.

Certainly the young man bears responsibility, but the cold hard fact is, WOMEN get pregnant and must carry a baby to term. It’s much easier for the boy to go scot free. I don’t like it, but it’s the truth. Of course, if we taught our kids silly old fashioned ideas like honor this would be less of an issue.
There was a time when social pressures kept more girls out of the back seat. You know, what’s really odd to me is that in this new era with good information on not getting pregnant and lots of options from pills to condoms to diaphragms, etc, we have MORE out of wedlock pregnancies. I suspect, but can’t prove, that because of abortion they feel that prevention is not worth the bother.

In my experience (I’m old now—I’ve seen a lot! LOL) it is fairly rare for that to happen. Usually one parent or both dislikes the other and things do not go smoothly. Many people tend to feel no qualms about using a child to get back at the other parent. And without fail, they ALL feel justified. It’s rarely a good situation.

The reality is that, while there are exceptions, children are better off even with abusive fathers than without them.

You been taking crazy pills?

All it convinced me to do was discourage serious dating by our teenagers.

Amen!

Whether he’s going to whore out the story or not, let’s face it, Levi was not yet husband or father material. Maybe that’s the lesson young women and girls should take from this story. It’s a lesson I feel was getting lost as most of us here were cheering them on that stage.

Comments about her lack of self control aren’t catty.

Yes, they are both idiots.

But she is the highly visible and newsworthy daughter of the governor and a member of a responsible family.
She had much more to lose and should have considered the impact of her actions on her family.

Should he be/have been more responsible?
Sure - but you can look at his background and figure the odds are against it.

He walks away and she is left impregnated, no husband and now with a fatherless baby to raise.

Unfortunately, that is a function of nature, and pointing out that the man is just as responsible for the fallout of premarital sex doesn’t change the fact that the woman is the one that gets left with a baby in her womb.

Wow, for some reason there's a real need here to pile on the Palins.

I don't see people piling on the Palins. I think most of the people here hold the Palins in very high regard.

I do see people making comments about a typical airheaded young girl who didn't think about the impact of unprotected pre-marital sex on herself, her family and the baby.

Yes, both parties are guilty but it is easy for the man to walk away. The woman has much more to lose.
The woman is the one that gets left carrying a baby for nine months and then having to raise it without a father.
