I wonder who programmed Obama’s teleprompter with this so-called “joke.” How insensitive can Obama get? His popularity may shift badly on this one.

I have been thinking about this comment all day and it actually bothers me more as the day has gone on.
It shows such a lack of judgment on his part. He knew that he was on national television so it can't be dismissed as an offhand comment, since I am sure that a lot of the interview was rehearsed ahead of the taping.
It was a big interview for him. His fans thought that it was groundbreaking. It was a big deal for him and his entourage, so it seems his choice of words would have been careful, and he says something this insensitive.
It either means that he is totally insensitive to disabled, which could be true or he has no ability to discern what is appropriate public discourse, which seems unlikely since he had been campaigning and in the public eye for eighteen months before the election.
