Doctors are warning kids across the country to stop "smoking Smarties" -- a fad they say can lead to infections, chronic coughing, choking and even maggots feeding off sugary dust in your nose.
Adolescents and teens have been crushing and inhaling candy, and then exhaling it, in an effort to look as though theyre smoking cigarettes, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday.
Countless youths have even posted how-to videos, like this one on YouTube, of themselves engaging in this behavior.
Health experts fear the behavior may lead to harmful conditions. Some kids have already shown signs of developing a smokers cough. Oren Friedman, a Mayo Clinic nose specialist, cautioned that frequent use could lead to infections or even worse, albeit rare, conditions, such as maggots inside the nose.

Nose Maggots?
That would make a great name for a band.....
Well now, you just can't beat that for fun!
I always remember being warned as a kid not to sniff glue because cockroaches would smell the glue and crawl into your mouth at night when you were asleep.
eeewwwwwww
Thank You for Smoking.
Are they going to tax Smarties now?
Does anybody remember those bubble gum cigarettes with powdered sugar at the tip so you can make “smoke”?
For the record, I loved ‘em at a penny a piece, as well as regular candy cigarettes (white candy sticks with a dot of pink at the end, and artwork similar to the big name brands), and I have never been a smoker.
I used to love the candy cigarettes when I was a kid. The ones with the powdered sugar that “smoked” were the best...
I enjoyed those as a kid too.
And as with you I never took up the real thing.
Same here.
Jeez. I have a little bag of smarties in my purse (diabetic emergency candy). Never did I think of crushing and inhaling them and I went to college back when we did a lot of inhaling.
What is on people’s minds to think of doing something like this?
Through a lack of spell-check, apparently.
Not yours, of course. I see that the original was misspelt. Just sayin'.
“And another thing kids, don’t lick a turd to get high”
That’s a pretty funny thread, and the misspelling was why!
No combies!
Thanks! I’ll read it :)
Like the warning on aerosol cans: Intentional misuse by deliberately concentrating and inhaling the contents can be harmful or fatal. It never would have occured to me to do this if I hadn’t seen this warning.
