Indian steel for pipeline angers laid-off U.S. steelworkers

Lawmakers in Illinois are calling foreign steel being used to construct a pipeline a slap in the face to U.S. workers.

Steel pipes painted with a "Made in India" logo are being shipped through Granite City, Ill., right in front of a steel mill where more than 2,800 steelworkers have been laid off.

"This is a perfect example of how our trade laws are failing our workers. At a time when thousands of local steelworkers are laid off, shipping steel from India for a project in our area is unacceptable and outrageous," said U.S. Rep. Jerry Costello, D-Ill. "It is precisely why I support strong 'Buy America' provisions and have voted against trade agreements. We can and should make that steel in the U.S. and I will continue to work for fair trade policies that support good-paying jobs here at home."

We can and should make that steel in the U.S.

Gee Jerry, we used to be able to do that, before
enviromental wackos clamped a lid on industry.
Too late now, at least it’s from India and not North Korea.

If it weren’t for the unions they’d use US steel.

That we can’t compete in cases like this should be a national embarrassment.

Thank the DNC and unions for pricing our companies out of the market. Took them 40 yrs to destroy the Country and now is their chance.

Pray for America, Our Troops and Rebel Republicans

Unions, trade deals or both I don't know.

Just what are Americans going to do in the future? Lawyers, accountants and walmart workers? What says that the next technology “boom” is going to be in the US and not in some other country with lower wages?

I was just thinking about the similarity between the unions and the failing of the businesses they unionize, and the government that was just elected. Sheeple.

Everybody knows how to make schedule 40 pipes now. It’s cheap steel. If you want 4140 steel tubes instead of s-40, there is a very much higher price to pay.

The unoins have a hand in it, along with taxes on corporations, environmental laws, and a host of others. Don’t blame it ALL on the unions.
Conditions in this country combine to kill the very things that made us great. Tha Steel companies have no interest in building modern plants, when ,at every turn they run into roadblocks. Our corporate taxes are about the highest in the civilised world.Every attempt at construction is held up by environmental impact studies, lawsuits and anti-everything politicians.
If by some miracle you finally get by these, there will be an endless parade of lawsuits. Anti-mining, anti-coke production, anti everything.
I have long been a proponent of nixing ALL corporate taxes on new modern steel plants. This loss of revenue would be offset by putting steelworkers to work so they would be taxpayers again, instead of tax users through the welfare rolls.
The trade-off for the tax moratorium would be for the Steel Company to train and employ these laid off workers.
With the existing conditions, an investor’s money is best spent elsewhere.
I consider STEEL to be our most strategic metal. Remember, EVERYTHING that is not made of steel is made on tools that are.
