OAKLAND (CBS 5 / AP / BCN):

SNIPPET: “The city of Oakland prepared to gather in grief Tuesday evening after a fourth police officer shot by a man wanted on a parole violation was taken off life support.

A major city thoroughfare, 74th Avenue and MacArthur Boulevard, was set to be closed down for the 6 p.m. vigil at the street corner where Officer John Hege and another officer were shot Saturday during a traffic stop.

Hege was taken off life support Monday night and his heart, liver and kidneys removed, said Andrea Breaux of Alameda County Medical Center. The 41-year-old officer had been declared brain dead Sunday, but the hospital kept him on life support so his organs could be donated, in keeping with his wishes.”

SNIPPET: “Prison and court records show Mixon, 26, had served nearly five years in state prison for assault with a firearm during an armed robbery in San Francisco. More recently, he served several months in prison last year for a parole violation.

Mixon also was a suspect in a December 2007 murder but was never charged because of lack of evidence, officials said.”

KFI reported last night that Mixon had also been ID’d as the prime suspect in a recent rape as a result of a DNA test. They reported that under California law, the fact that the DNA from the rape matched the DNA on file with the state wasn’t sufficient to allow police to arrest and charge him with rape. State law required yet another DNA test.

“Organs from slain Calif. officer save up to 50 lives”
CNN.com

SNIPPET: “OAKLAND, Calif. — Organs donated by a slain Oakland, California, police officer saved four lives, and his donated tissue will enhance the lives of up to 50 others, the California Transplant Donor Network said Wednesday.

Officer John Hege, 41, was pronounced brain dead on Sunday but was kept on life support pending a decision on organ donation. He was the fourth Oakland officer to die after a gunman fired on police in two weekend incidents.”
