US buys Mexico helicopters to fight drug violence

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has pledged $80 million (£55m) to Mexico to acquire Blackhawk helicopters to fight drug gangs threatening the country's stability.

"I'm pleased to announce that the Obama administration working closely with Congress intends to provide more than 80 million dollars in urgently needed funding for Mexican law enforcement," she said.

"These aircraft will help Mexican police respond aggressively and successfully to the threats coming from the cartels," Mrs Clinton said.

The announcement came as she admitted that America's "insatiable demand" for illegal drugs is to blame for much of the violence engulfing Mexico.

The US secretary of state also acknowledged America's "inability" to stop weapons being smuggled across the border from the US and being used by the drug cartels in a bloody turf war.

Mrs Clinton made her candid remarks as she flew to Mexico City for a two-day visit where she will discuss US plans to ramp up border security with President Felipe Calderón.

"Our insatiable demand for illegal drugs fuels the drug trade. Our inability to prevent weapons from being illegally smuggled across the border to arm these criminals causes the death of police officers, soldiers and civilians," she said during her flight to Mexico City.

"I feel very strongly we have a co-responsibility."

She said US efforts to ban drugs such as cocaine and heroine had clearly not worked and it was unfair to blame Mexico for its drug cartel problem.

Although Barack Obama has pledged to devote an additional 360 federal agents to border security, the US Congress this month trimmed the amount of drug aid money it will set aside this fiscal year to $300 million from $400 million last year.

LOL, what’s mere millions when...

Pakistan set to reap $35 billion windfall from terrorism

WASHINGTON: Terrorism pays. That may well be the message the United States and its allies send out to the world this week as they line up billions of dollars in aid to Pakistan despite the country’s military and intelligence agencies being implicated by American officials in acts and practice of terrorism.

Ignoring confirmation about the Pakistan’s continued support and use of terrorism obtained through electronic surveillance and informants, and even brazen affirmation by Pakistani officialdom itself, the Obama administration is set to lavish a bonanza that might eventually add up to more than $ 30-$ 35 billion...
