Editorial: Renew U.S. ban on assault weapons

Police have yet to determine how Lovelle Mixon, a parolee with a lengthy criminal record, got his hands on the handgun and the SKS rifle he used to kill four Oakland police officers on that grim Saturday afternoon just over a week ago. But the horror of the slayings drives home the need to enforce and enhance gun-control laws throughout the nation. For starters, Congress must bring back the national ban on 19 types of military-style weapons it enacted in 1994, with the leadership of Sen. Dianne Feinstein, but allowed to expire. The inexpensive SKS is a semi-automatic carbine designed in the Soviet Union. Unlike its successor, the AK-47, it is not classified as an assault weapon.

All of these mass shootings are perpetrated by individuals who are angry, dispossesed, alienated and confused. It is a consistent mindset that has its parallel in the political inclinations and characteristics of liberalism and liberals. So can’t we just say it is liberalism that is at the bottom of things here...not guns?

Not a single ethical proof in this pathetic rhetorical drivel! Every last line is a tug-on-the-heartstrings piece of liberal garbage.
They went ahead and quote the VPC, known to cavort with liberals, and they went with the typical NRA-is-evil byline.
And finally, they mention that CA has the strictest gun laws in the nation, yet that fact alone completely escapes this dolt. Ever think to research where most of those LEOs are killed? I can assure you that it’s not in Middle America or the South.
Bring it on Obama! MOLWN LABE!

Watch, theyll define a semi-auto 22 long rifle as an assault weapon.
According to the old AWB if said rifle had certain cosmetic features it was an "assault weapon". Any rifle able to accept detachable magazines with a folding stock and a pistol grip was magically transformed into an "assault weapon", no matter the caliber.

There was a law against it. You are right. Lovelle Mixon would have been in deep trouble if he had not been killed in the incident. The prosecutor would have used the fact that he possessed an illegal weapon as plea bargain tool to get Mixon to plead guilty to 2nd degree manslaughter.

“Police have yet to determine how Lovelle Mixon, a parolee with a lengthy criminal record, got his hands on the handgun and the SKS rifle he used to kill four Oakland police officers on that grim Saturday afternoon just over a week ago. “
The very same way felons like him will CONTINUE to get access to “assault” rilfes after law-abiding citizens are prevented from buying them.

now, explain the double magazine & its function...Why would there be a need to explain anything?
Why does a person climb a mountain?
If you don't want the double clip then don't get it. If you want to lug the extra ammo around and have to reload the clips then do so.

Oh, “explain” didn’t mean “justify”.
I was asking HOW DOES IT WORK?
Does it empty one and then start on the other,
or does it alternate?

Oh, explain didnt mean justify. Then, please, accept my apologies for the smartness. I don't tolerate gun banners well and I made a hasty
assumption. (stated while wiping off the egg...)
Does it empty one and then start on the other, or does it alternate?
You have to manually change the clip. You detach the spent clip and insert the full one. Quick and easy.

The speed of gunfire makes it harder for officers to react.
they think this makes assault weapons deadly? they should see what people like knapp, flanigan or miculek can do with non-assault weapons.

there’s a clip that holds two mags together, about an inch or so apart, only one is inserted into the gun. function is to have the second mag more handy- you don’t have to pull one out, set it down, then grab another, the second one in already in your hand.
would be great for mag retention in the case of a tactical reload.

They don't have the intelligence, or the will, to look them up and find out who they are.

on the plus side, that’s probably a good thing. it’d take less than 3 seconds for them to decide to ban a whole lot more guns.
