“Trademark Pearls” haha because no other first lady has ever worn pearls.

LOL! It's before the time of these Washington parvenus to remember it (fifteen years ago!), but Mrs. Bush the elder wore trademark pearls at virtually every public occasion, to the extent that retailers stocked necklaces for sale called "Barbara Bush pearls."

Yes that was my first thought as well - how the media made Barbara out to be so matronly because of her suits and pearls.

Jacqueline Kennedy's signature jewelry was also multi-stranded pearls.

But both Mrs. Kennedy and Mrs. Bush knew how to wear them for elegant effect.
