A Month in the Life of George W Bush (news and photos): April 2009

As we enter April 2009 we are being bombarded by the media hyping up the first 100 days of President Obama I thought it would be nice to look back at the first 100 days of George W Bush Presidency.

The White House Website for the Bush Administration had a photo essay for the first 100 days which I am sure will provoke fond memories.

At the weekend I will post photos covering the first 2 weeks of April 2001 which once again I am sure will make us all feel nostalgic for the President we supported, respected and trusted to keep us safe for the last 8 years. Later this month I will post photos from the second half of Aril 2001 plus a selection of other photos that I am sure will be breath of fresh air and produce fond memories.

First of all before the photos I will post the text of remarks that George W Bush made at a Congressional Luncheon marking the first 100 days of the Bush Adminstration - ah those were the days.

I will also post some photos I have found of the Bush family for March 2009 including some of the former First Lady.

Enjoy your visit to Sanity Island

Thank you for the ping, DrDeb.

The site that will “Set the Record Straight” is an excellent idea. Had he done some of the more minor things Obama has done, the “world would explode” as O’Reiley said tonight. The media would have never let it slide.

It’s so nice to see a First Lady that knows what that position represents and dresses and acts accordingly. We sure miss you Laura Bush.

Hi everyone - weekend here at last. Had a bit of a set back with dad yesterday, early hours of the morning he was experiencing a lot of pain in his stomach when he breathed in.

We left it for about an hour and then decided it was best to ring the out of hours number at his doctor’s surgery. The telephonist advised us a doctor would ring us back shortly about half an hour later he rang, spoke to dad asked a few questions, assured him that he did not think it was an emergency and probably only gas. He told dad to take some painkillers and only drink clear fluids and ring his doctor later and ask him to come and check him out. Dad said he did not really want to wait that long and ask if the emergency doctor could visit him. He said OK but there were 3 other calls so he would be a while, if he thought things were getting worse call the emergency services.

Dad decided to wait and the doctor duly arrive about an hour later and confirmed that in his opinion it was only gas and all dad’s obs were good and normal. He suggested a light diet probably just water, cordial and yogurt. In the end dad did have a light meal of poached fish but stuck to water and cordial for drink.

Hopefully over the weekend the gas will go, this is a problem with people with a stoma and you have to watch that you do not consume too much food that creates gas.

I will get him some cranberry juice later today which is something recommended by the doctors for someone with a stoma.

Thank you for your kind words, yes things are working out well for dad and me. The next month will be hard though because our cleaner who is also a child minder is having to work full time as child minder for the next 2 weeks to cover the Easter holidays. She has however managed to arrange with another child minder that she have the 2 children for a few hours each week so she can still come into me to do a bit of cleaning and laundry.

Her mother also comes in 3 afternoons a week and sit with dad and does any washing up or laundry to help out before I get home from work but she is on holiday with her partner in Australia for the next month. His daughter has recently had a child and they are going out to to see her and rest of the family and spend some time sightseeing.

I may have a few hours off during this period so that we do not get behind with the work around the house and also I do not tire myself out trying to do it all in the evenings.

I said before I may not agree with my PM on many things but this does not allow other countries leaders to treat him badly as this is not treating the person or their views badly but my country.

Of course I know you and others here on FR and elsewhere well enough to know this does not reflect all or many Americans but it does worry me that if he treats all other countries similar after the gloss a hype has worn off America will be thought of as an ignorant and brash country with no or little interest or respect for other country's traditions and customs. Will he bother to learn some of the Japanese custom's and show due respect to them is one that really jumps to mind knowing how important this is and how even our commissioning engineers at work are taught how to behaviour especially the way of entering and leaving a room where there are important officials and older people present. I cringe to think how Obama will handle situations like that.

You will survive because you are Americans and you know that he does not represent how you feel and treat each other and others of different cultures and view points.

I am fine dad is very tired at present after the broken night's sleep. On the whole though we are settling down to a routine now.

He is having his eye's tested this afternoon his optician has arranged for a domicile visit today at about 2.30

I am touched by your comment I am sure that would be something that would be much appreciated. I saw a clip of the Michelle incident and could not believe it, the first thing they would all have been told is you do not touch the Queen not only did she touch her but she sort of hugged her. I am afraid I think this was deliberate not spontaneous as how the media are trying to portray it. I remember when GWB did sort of lightly put his arm around to guide the Queen during her visit to the States he quickly removed it and no doubt apologised I doubt Zero and his wife either did or even thought it was necessary especially if it was deliberate.

The Kenyan thing is crazy I have had many dealings with Kenyans and most of them do not harbour bad feelings towards the British in fact many have fond memories of the British and blame their own black African leaders for most of the problems in the African continent. One of dad's cares is Kenyan and she certainly has no doubt where blame is due and it certainly is not with the British.

It was disgusting and low class and would have gone against everything that they would have been briefed on. I am afraid I do not buy the spontaneous reaction theory I feel it was something calculated to show that they considered the Queen not a head of state that should be treated according to the customs of that country but as show of anti royalist and trying to demean the Queen's position. Maybe they thought it would actually give him credence and support amongst Americans who for good reason do not agree with a monarchy.

Again they have miss-judged the actual situation. There are many Americans who not wanting a monarchy for themselves love to see the pomp and ceremony and appreciate it for what it is and treat it with due respect, you only have to look at the crowds that were present the last time the Queen and the Duke visited the States, we showed many of these on the dose. Maybe amongst some of the far left sreet thugs in Chicago this may sit well but the average American and Brit will not take it well.

To compare to the impish wink of GWB is ridiculous and something that made headlines worldwide the Michelle incident is shown as a spontanoues down to earth gesture which IMHO was neither. GWB was and was received by the Queen as such and no doubt later GWB would have checked he had no offended Michelle no doubt did not.

That is certainly a part of the world I would love to visit and is one the reasons this is one of my favourite photos of Dick and Lynne Cheney.

You cannot believe it. I can see if he was in a venerable area then to block a drive way or path would be acceptable but this was Buckingham Palace for goodness-sake.

This was one of craziest present I have very heard of. For one thing it transpired later the Queen already had an Ipod no doubt inspired by her grandchildren and second thing it just seems such an inappropriate gift. There are many things that symbolize America and its culture and traditions rather than an Ipod which really though originating from America is something that is worldwide thing and as available in Britain as in the States.

I think it is summed up in no class and as I said before I believe this was deliberate and not the cute spontaneous slip ups that GWB occasionally made with world leaders that the press loved to jump on, yet with Michelle in the main they will give her he benefit of the doubt.

At the end of the day whoever the President and first lady are there are no excuses they would have been briefed to death about correct protocol.
