“Cynics may view the legislation as an attempt to ward off conservative challenger Pat Toomey in a 2010 primary, especially since Specter introduced it just two days before blasting Toomey in a new ad.”

BINGO!

Regardless of his reason, it’s probably the best thing he’s ever proposed.

Sen. Arlen Specter (R-PA) has introduced legislation calling for a 20% across the board flat-tax. His office touts that the policy would replace the 17,000 page IRS code with a simple "postcard that could be completed in 15 minutes."

What would the tax rate be without Porkulus, which was passed because of who's vote? Anyone, anyone? That's right, Specter.

Where is that picture of the postcard that says, “How much did you make last year? Send it in.”

Specter could care less about a flat tax. He’s just hoping to be elected again, and will say anything to achieve that goal. It doesn’t mean a thing, and he knows there’s not a chance of it passing.

What a weasel!

Sure... they’re going to fire thousands of IRS workers; put who knows how many accountants, lawyers, large, corporate tax prep services, mom and pop tax services out of business.

Don’t hold your breath. Too many people have too much invested in the present set-up for it ever to change.

If the idea is that Arlen has redeeming social value, forget it. Too late to make the sale.
