IMO Gen Slim was one of the most underrated heroes of the Second World War.
My father served on his staff when he was Field Marshal and Governor General of Australia. One of my regrets is I was so young at the time - I met him but I don’t remember it.
My dad flew the Hump in the CBI campaign. It was the forgotten war before the Forgotten War.
As an equivalent of an ROTC product [much like Marshall], and an Indian Army officer, Slim was largely unknown to the old boys club that produced Alexander, and was not one of Alan Brook's clique [Monty and his acolytes]. So he wasn't given a great deal of publicity, or support. The fact that he was eventually Chief of the Imperial General Staff says volumes more about Slim than it does about the Brit military establishment.
What I like about Slim was his self deprecating modesty, when he finished giving some morale boosting speech to the troops before a big push an enthusiastic soldier shouted “We’re all behind you general!”, to which he smiled and replied “Oh no, I shall be miles behind you”.
That sort of stuff takes real panache and an understanding of your own troops’ mentality, otherwise it would fall flat on its face, the fact that Slim’s men would have gone into Hell and back for him tells you all you need to know about the man.
