Michelle Obama Gets Her Knees Dirty in the White House Garden (barf alert)

First Lady Michelle Obama, the knees of her cropped black slacks covered in dirt, planted herb seedlings and carrots in her new White House Kitchen Garden Thursday, telling local schoolchildren enlisted to help that fresh veggies are "brain food."

Making the point that homegrown is a cheap way for families to eat healthily, the First Lady asked the kids: "How much do you think it costs to do this garden?"

"Over $100,000," guessed a boy.

Laughing, Mrs. Obama replied, "My husband would go crazy if he thought we were spending that kind of money! ... It's between $100 and $200. So it's not a lot of money. And this garden can not only feed my family, but it's going to feed all the staff at the White House. We're going to serve it at some State Dinners."

Mrs. Obama said the top question she got from world leaders on her recent trip to Europe with the president was about the garden. "From Prince Charles on down, they were excited we were planting this."

As for another pressing question back home – when they'll need to worry about putting chicken wire around the garden to keep out a frolicking First Dog – Mrs. Obama said only, "Soon, soon!"

That's a sissy garden. Where are the tomatoes, corn, beans (butter and pole), squash, cucumbers etc.

Oh, come on. We’re conservatives, so let’s be fair. Just because we don’t like this woman’s politics doesn’t mean she can’t do some things right. And planting a garden is a good thing to do. This is setting an example for a lot of people who wouldn’t ordinarily think they could do it. I approve of the fact that she’s getting out in the sunshine and digging around, even if it is just a photo op. To be honest, I don’t suppose she has a lot of time for weeding and I don’t expect her to do it.

If Cindy McCain were doing the same thing we’d all be thrilled.

Looks like she’s still got her drag Queen lashes on.

Prince Charles is very much a "hands on" person. He does actually do quite a bit of basic work on his property and enjoys it.

My source is a friend who worked for him for several years. What is yours?

Gee. You have a single source for your perspective. I’m overwhelmed.

Oh, here he is in his gardening duds.

I'm guessing that Camille is a gardener, too.

"...My husband would go crazy if he thought we were spending that kind of money..."

I don't know about that. Didn't they recently pay to fly a pizza guy with his pans and dough 850 miles for a pizza?

Notice the nice signs for each type of plant. The signs are painted green with white scrolled lettering. How much did those signs cost the taxpayers?

Only the best for the Obamas. It's government money, after all.

I gave you mine - one of many actually, but you cannot come up with a any credible source for your bigotry.

I pity you.

Good day.

I have no problem with this. In fact, it is good that the President eat decent healthy food. I mean really there is enough to complain about Obama without being ridiculous. My Grandparents had a huge garden and it was fun in the summer to pick strawberries, corn on the cob and other foods.

What is your problem? My problem is gratuitous photo ops by intellectually dishonest pols.

You'd rather have Michelle Obama drafting plans to nationalize health care, like Hillary was doing when she was first lady?

Michelle Obama is showing these kids that with a little effort they can actually produce something and give them something to be proud of.

ALL first ladies have some kind of cause or project. Michelle teaching those kids that effort produces rewards is the best thing that she could be doing, particularly for the kids that would be most likely to look up to her.
