Canadian man leaps to death from flying airplane
OTTAWA, April 16 (Xinhua) -- A young man aboard a small charter flight flying in northern Canada forced open the aircraft's door and leapt to his death, police said Thursday.
The accident happened Wednesday night as the plane was flying from Yellowknife, capital of Northwest Territories, to Cambridge Bay in Nunavut Territory, a spokesman of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said.
The man was apparently distressed before he leapt from the aircraft that was flying at an altitude of about 23,000 feet.
The crew of the King Air 200 aircraft called in an emergency during the flight, reporting that one of the two passengers on board was being unruly.
When police met the plane as it landed in Cambridge Bay, they learned that the 20-year-old man had opened the exit door and jumped out, despite efforts by the two pilots to stop the man from doing so.
With the cabin breached mid-air, the pilots steered the plane to a safe landing in Cambridge Bay, police said.
An air search begun Thursday for the man's remains.

Accident? I think not.
Meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Darwin award?
LOL!
As I understand it, the Darwins are for people who kill themselves accidentally while in the process of doing something stupid.
It sounds like this guy just plain committed suicide.
I concede that he is removed from the gene pool all the same but I am somewhat of a Darwins purist so I would have to argue against nominating him.
But I'll go along with whatever the Committee decides.
They don’t make an airplane big enough to hold all the people it would take to throw me out.
“The accident happened”
I agree that was no accident. Maybe an incident.
He won’t be doing that again, will he?
Love how they call it an “accident” - while the initial statement suggests not so.
“distressed before he leapt”
Interesting how they use the form “leapt” (proper) while using the modern-illiterate form “distressed” (should be “distraught”).
Grammar issues get in my craw. Sorry, can’t help commenting.
ROFL
And he DID jump from a cliff!
My first thought too.
Reminded me of what my friend's young daughter said she had to write about after 9-11. She told me that her teacher said to write about the 9-11 tragedy.
Tragedy didn't sit well with me. I told her she ought to write about MURDER!
“An air search begun Thursday for the man’s remains.”
And how do they know that he died? He may have landed on a pile of hay.
Seriously, though. Does not sound like an "accident" in the least. The young man committed suicide.
LOL! Remember my jump days.
Im sure he had a moment or two, to contemplate his original idea, whatever that might have been did he have second thoughts, only he and GOD knows.
My question is how did he get the door open?
At 23,000 ft the plane was obviously pressurized. The doors normally open inward and the internal pressure just seals them tighter.
So how did he do it?
