WASHINGTON (AP) - People who want to give back to their communities through service will get more opportunities to do so under a bill being signed Tuesday by President Barack Obama.

The $5.7 billion bill triples the size of the AmeriCorps service program over the next eight years, and expands ways for students and seniors to earn money for college through their volunteer work. It aims to foster and fulfill people's desire to make a difference, such as by mentoring children, cleaning up parks or building and weatherizing homes for the poor.

Bolstering voluntary public service programs has been a priority of Obama, who credits his work as a community organizer in his early 20s for giving him direction in life.

Early 20's? Isn't that all he did?

I’ll put “Paid volunteerism” with “jumbo shrimp” and “Congression ethics” in my list of oxymorons.

No doubt these programs will cost more to administer and run than what the photo-ops will actually accomplish.

Oddly, the article does not mention the camps (um, campuses) located in rural areas where yoot 18-24 will be transported for training while residents of the camp (uh, campus). Nor does it mention that uniforms would be provided for the yoot.

I don’t recall that being taken out of the conference bill that was passed.

building and weatherizing homes for the poor

Why don't the poor ever put in any man hours on these projects to help themselves?

Several of my tenants went to New Orleans to help build homes 3 summers ago. NOT ONE person from New Orleans was on any of the crews.... seriously obnoxious.

And, this senior has zero intentions of volunteering ...

Earning money for voluntary work.

By definition wouldn’t that be a job? Unless you are incarcerated, a purchased servant in a muslim country, or grew up on a farm, I don’t know many places that there is involuntary work.

The idiocy of this statement astounds me. It's the liberal word-redefinition game, and the word of the day is "volunteer"! Morons ... they are all morons ...
