Via Greg Hengler, the chairman puts on a brave face for CNN. Dont get your hopes up even Michael Barones bearish about Toomeys chances, calling his candidacy folly but TNR asks a good question: How exactly do the Democrats benefit from having Specter switch? With Toomey sure to beat him in a GOP primary, they could have handpicked any centrist Pennsylvania Democrat they like for the general and stood an odds-on shot of winning the seat. Instead, they let Specter switch for the most cynical, opportunistic reasons, a fact thatll weigh on some Democrats next year.

We should make sure that president Bush goes out to Penn to show his support for Specter again.
What might beat Specter is his own opportunism.
Because, assuming the Franken decision stands, the Dems get a fillibuster-proof 60 votes this year, and can put Arlie to pasture in the Dim primaries next year.
Win-win.
It’s time to ex-Specter-ate!
I’m not so sure that Spectre left on his own volition.
Even if he lost the primary to Toomey, he would have millions in his campaign chest as a consolation prize.
Now he has contributors screaming for their money back and has to start hitting democrat funding sources fast.
Toomey and Steele won’t get a shot at Specter. Specter may claim to be a democrat, and may vote for socialism in the next 18 months, but that’s not enough to save him. He’s a traitor and no one likes traitors. The dems will knife him in the back in their own primary. And I won’t shed a tear.
LOL — that would probably finish Specter right there.
Will he (or be required to) refund the contributions from pubbie supporters?
I agree with you I am not sure he left on his own — too many people like me were telling NRSC that we would not donate as long as they supported Specter. Maybe money does talk!
Why would Spectre make the switch without an assurance from the DNC that he wouldn’t face any Democratic opposition the primary?
Don’t forget the waterboy:

Will Limbaugh now allow Toomey equal time on his show?

Is this correct? Do we have these things serving in government?
Apparently Rendell made that promise but there’s at least one ‘rat that is making primary noises notwithstanding. If you want the article, it’s on Politico under Ben Smith’s stuff IIRC...
He wouldn't have. This was in the works for some time, I'm sure. It was laughable when Stephenopolous tried to spin the story as if Obama just found out about it. Please.
Specter will be fully funded by the general election, the unions will be on board, despite the card-check fiasco, and Barry will campaign fro Arly full bore.
Good post.
Nothing like making an announcement that ensures that the Dems give him 110% financial and ACORN style support.
Idiots tipped their hands too early.
F’n idiots.
Does he have to return the money (from the Republican party)?
I wonder how Baby Casey feels about this? And what about Fast Eddy? ( I just wonder what is up all three of their sleeves)
Anyway, I hope we can get rid of him once and for all, but remember Penn is a heavy D-Rat commonwealth....:(
These RINOs all act like teenage girls just looking to accepted at the lunch table in Washington.
Specter reminds me of a back stabbing valley girl.
Yep.
I’ve saved those links for years now, because I knew the day would arrive when people would forget that BUSH AND HUSH SUPPORTED SPINCTER FOR REEELECTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
