two things working against him

- blue-dog and moderate Dems worried his policies will sink them back home

- every member of the Senate thinks he/she is actually the President

That being said, I have the sinking feeling that somehow cramdowns will be baaack....

I have the feeling that many of those who voted for Obama didn’t really know quite what he was or what he would do; you’re right - he’s the focus of a personality cult, and, as such, I think a great many people projected their fantasies onto him.

In the event, many Marxists and Utopian Socialists on the Hard Left are disenchanted because he’s not going far enough, while those who want something more moderate, just to maintain their hold on power in 2010 and later, will attempt to pull him toward the center, and become impatient as he declines to go there.

To my (admittedly flawed) way of thinking, he’s an example of Lincoln’s famous maxim, “You can please all the people some of the time, and you can please some of the people all of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time.”

American society has never been more sharply divided, and he’s not looking like a uniter of factions. Thus, I don’t think he can maintain his popularity at current levels, and, let’s not forget, he won with only about 51% or 52% of the vote.

Moreover, in view of the horrors of incompetence and socialist folderol he’s perpetrating on the nation, Republican opposition, and even the opposition of middle-of-the-road Democrats, will harden. I could be wrong (and THAT’S certainly been known to happen), but it’s my belief that the Democrats will lose seats in both houses of congress in 2010 and lose the White House in 2012.

Just my view.

On the other hand, in the highly unlikely event that his Marxist manipulation of the economy leads to Boom Times - or even a halfway respectable recovery - he could win a second term. Most voters vote with their wallets and little else. I think, however, that, given the track record of socialist regimes, this latter eventuality is highly improbable.

The one Wild Card is the outbreak of a MAJOR war somewhere in the world, involving the United States. Then all bets would be off.

Clinton was a B-lister who stepped up at the right time and dethroned Bush 41 when he stumbled. Congress saw him as weak and they tried to push him around. Clinton (and his wife) pushed back harder.

Obama is a rock star. A savvy political giant, he is not. Congress will try to push him around and see if he pushes back, and how hard. He will, in the words of Joe Biden, be tested.
