Decriminalising groups of prostitutes who band together would make their working lives safer, delegates at the RCN's annual congress in Harrogate heard.
The "stigma" which surrounds working girls means many are afraid to visit their doctors or local hospital and leaves them vulnerable to attacks, as seen with the murder of five prostitutes in Ipswich in 2006.
The vote calling for legalised brothels, by the mainly female union, was described by one delegate as the "good girls helping the bad girls".
Carol Watts, a nurse from Cambridgeshire, who proposed the motion, said: "The simple truth is that there will always be people willing to pay for sex with others without commitment.
"We should acknowledge that that is part of life in the UK and should make sure that there is not an underclass of marginalised women in the country.
She added: "Perhaps the stigma of being a working girl can be reduced over time and we will remove our morality goggles."

1)AIDS
2)Hepatitis C
Oh, yes: Let's by all means discard our "morality goggles" and view things without any consideration of their moral values and ethical repercussions.
Funny that this person probably thought that her dismissive reference to "morality" was a sure-fire way to win the argument.
Regards,
Outlawing prostitution will rid the world of AIDS and Hep C? Who knew?
Prostitution should be legal. Driving it underground only makes it less safe. Venereal diseases have always been with us!

if there’s an opening for a quality control inspector, put me in;-)
Prostitiution should be legal there, here and everywhere. It is not the legitimate roll of gvt to tell 2 consenting people what they can or cannot do.
I would suggest that those who suppoprt such laws on moral or religious grounds are in fact not really as conservative as they think.
My husband has a friend who got Hep C from giving blood years ago. He manage to kick it.
driving prostitution underground would make it more dangerous. It’s a business, and should conservatives allow people to make these sort of choices, no matter how horrid they may be?
No matter what the level of health care these woman get I think it is safe to say it will never change the Stigma of their profession.
If these woman make the choice to sell the service of sexual favors then they should be required to see a doctor for health care and pay for that out of pocket as part of their business requirements.
(I dont condone prostitution btw, but that is just me)
The nurses looking for second sources of income?
In Amsterdam the prostitutes must be tested monthly.
So you are saying that if they had outlawed prostitution 30 years ago, we wouldn’t have AIDS or hep C?
Prostitution should remain illegal. The moment it’s legal, the government can force you into it if you are on welfare.
I am not remotely joking. There was a case in Germany maybe two years ago of a woman being pressured to go on the game. Think it can’t happen here?
I heard that she got fired shortly afterward, though, for laying down on the job.
You know if the government gets involved, you local brothel will be staff with transfer from your local post office and DMV.
LOL!
Was she fired by her "head nurse?"
Untouched issue in this article is slave-prostitution, Eastern European women trafficked in primarily by Albanians in England. The women are in perpetual debt, under constant watch, and their families are threatened - so a safe house in England doesn’t help much there.
