Why limit yourself to one? Absolutely!
12 Guage with 000 buck and rifled slugs for home defense.
A large bore hand gun for close range.
A 30.06 for hunting Deer and other large game.
I had a few "fun guns", an UZI 9mm and a CAR15 but the basics are basics for a reason.

Agree with the shotgun, but not the ammo. IMO the largest shot for home defense would be 4s. At typical home range you are going to get about the same spread of lead anyway - whatever body part you hit is mulch. However big lead will penetrate walls and damage things you might not wanna.
Slug in a shotgun for home defense? Not sure why unless you have to shoot the engine block of a car coming through your front door.
Just IMO.
