Is the gas tax really that low? I thought I’d heard (read?) somewhere that most of the cost of a gallon of gas was from taxes, and that the retailer only made a small profit.

I don’t see several Pittsburgh area taxes on the list.

How about Parking tax- 35% in the city? Head tax- per capita tax levied by some of the suburban boros around here? Or Land Tax- land is taxed at a much higher rate than buildings in Pittsburgh. I believe we’re also in the last year of the merchantile tax on gross reciepts- levied by the city here.

Slaughter tax. Probably in every state, but I found out about it this year, because our greedy governor Doyle(D-Wisconsin) is raising the slaughter tax in his over the top spendulus budget that is being passed this weekend under the cover of the holiday weekend.

There is a per animal slaughter tax, for commercial producers of chickens, hogs, beef cattle etc.

Link would be the governor’s budget. This was discussed weeks ago on local talk radio, along with way more egregious tax hikes and new taxes and fees.

New also is the Regional Transit Taxing Authority. They’re gonna tax us so they can build trains no one will use. That will be an increase in our sales tax. It’ll be either regional or state wide depending on how brave the dems are in stealing even more of our money.

Link is also the governor’s budget. He is making up new law in this budget. He doesn’t care to let the people have a say. Almost 9000 tax protesters showed up at the Capitol April 15th. The politicians were too busy entertaining lobbyists inside the Capitol building to notice the people outside.

Tennessee and other states have what they call a “Professional Privilege Tax”. It is a tax levied on licensed professionals such as doctors, lawyers, professional engineers, pharmacists, etc.

There is a "rat control fee" added onto my real property tax bill in California. Does that count?

I guess the tax is for real rats and not 'Rats. Too bad.

Texas has over 2,400 businesses which require licensing along with the appropriate fees. Former governor Ann Richards turned those charges into a cash cow for state coffers.

Also not included in your list are the thousands of charges we pay for "government services." Examples include turnpike tolls, park entrance fees, and many more. One might even throw oil lease bonuses, production royalties, patent licenses and other charges into that category. And how about school related mandates such as tuition at state colleges, lab fees, textbook rental fees, and gym charges.

Then, you could throw in tens of thousands of special levies -- for everything from hospitals and schools to sports complexes.

Don't forget the thousands of different fines that are/can be collected -- everything from parking tickets to late payment fees for taxes to turning in books late at libraries.

And what about permits? Are those voluntary?

And then we could talk about imposed costs of doing business -- from OSHA to continuing professional education to special inspections.

Finally, don't forget the crushing burden of the cost of governmental regulation -- from senseless labeling to environmental protection to fuel conservation.

Sigh.

Don't forget all of the FCC “surcharges” on telephone and cellular use. (If the carrier has to “offset” the government charges, aren't they really simply a tax?)

From my monthly statement.

Sprint Surcharges are rates we choose to collect from you to help defray costs imposed on us. Surcharges are not taxes or amounts we are required to collect from you by law. Surcharges may include: Federal USF, regulatory charges, administrative charges, gross receipts charges, and other charges incurred to recover costs associated with governmental programs. The amounts, and the components used to calculate Surcharge amounts, are subject to change.
Federal-Univ Serv Assess Non-LD $1.91
Administrative Charge $0.99
Regulatory Charge $0.20

$3.10

State of Georgia Fees and Taxes

Government Fees & Taxes $4.81

Georgia State-Sales Tax $2.54
