“NKorea confirms ‘powerful’ nuclear test”

SNIPPET: “SEOUL (AFP) — North Korea said it staged a “successful” underground nuclear weapons test which was more powerful than its previous test of an atomic bomb almost three years ago.

The North “successfully conducted one more underground nuclear test on May 25 as part of the measures to bolster up its nuclear deterrent for self-defence in every way as requested by its scientists and technicians,” the Korean Central News Agency said.

“The current nuclear test was safely conducted on a new higher level in terms of its explosive power and technology of its control,” it said.

The results resolved “scientific and technological problems arising in further increasing the power of nuclear weapons and steadily developing nuclear technology.””

“North Korea Signals Possible Short-Range Missile Test”
Friday, May 22, 2009

SNIPPET: “North Korean activities suggest it might be readying to conduct a short-range missile test from a launch facility along its east coast, Reuters reported today (see GSN, May 15).

Pyongyang advised ships to avoid entering waters roughly 25 miles from the Musudan-ri installation. Mobile aunch-pad vehicles have also been spotted near the base, a South Korean source told the Yonhap News Agency.
“Looking from the activities of the North’s military, it’s not a long-range ballistic missile but a short-range one that they’re trying to fire,” the official reportedly said.”

Nuke test!

Looks like epicenter was very close to the 2006 nuke test:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_North_Korean_nuclear_test

It occurred at the geographic coordinates 41°17′38.4″N 129°08′2.4″E / 41.294°N 129.134°E / 41.294; 129.134 with a horizontal location uncertainty of ±9.6 km (6.0 miles). This is 73 km (45 miles) north of Kimchaek, 90 km (55 miles) southwest of Chongjin, 180 km (112 miles) south of Yanji, and 385 km (240 miles) northeast of Pyongyang.[36]

Hmm. Weird that that report could just be sitting out there for two hours on the USGS without any talk of a test in the media - IIRC the last test they were much faster with news (however the NKs had given a very specific testing window that time.)

Thought about posting this thread in breaking but I just wasn’t sure, not being able to see a good waveform.

“North Korea Conducts Second Nuclear Test”
By EVAN RAMSTAD

SNIPPET: “SEOUL – North Korea said it conducted its second test of a nuclear device on Monday morning, making good on a warning it issued in the wake of a long-range missile test in early April.

This undated photo shows North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il inspecting the University of Korean People’s Army Unit 10215.

The country’s state media announced the test at noon local time, about two hours after defense monitors in South Korea detected an “artificial earthquake” in the same place where North Korea conducted its first nuclear test in October 2006. North Korea said the explosion was more powerful than occurred in the first test.”

“(LEAD) N. Korea confirms 2nd nuclear test:
By Kim Hyun

SNIPPET: “SEOUL, May 25 (Yonhap) — North Korea confirmed that it has “successfully” conducted its second nuclear test on Monday, following a warning of retaliation it issued last month after the U.N.’s condemnation of its rocket launch.

“The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea) successfully conducted one more underground nuclear test on May 25 as part of measures to bolster its nuclear deterrent for self-defence,” the official Korean Central News Agency said.”

SNIPPET: “The North said the second test was conducted “on a new higher level in terms of its explosive power and technology of its control.”

The results of the test “helped satisfactorily settle the scientific and technological problems,” it said, “further increasing the power of nuclear weapons and steadily developing nuclear technology.”

Seoul’s Korea Meteorological Administration said it has detected an artificial earthquake at 9:54 a.m. with a 4.5 magnitude. In the previous test, the detected magnitude was 3.6, according to Yoo Yong-gu, an earthquaker detector at the agency.”

This is series. All you fonds are belong to us. Or something like that. A very old FR joke that is tasteless to mention at a serious time like this.

Maybe Obama can give the North Korean dictator an I-Pod or something in the hope this will pacify him. That is probably the extent of what the current administration would be prepared to do.
