“(2nd LD) N. Korea confirms second nuclear test”

By Kim Hyun
SEOUL, May 25 (Yonhap) —

SNIPPET: “According to the Seoul-based Korea Meteorological Administration, artificial seismic waves were detected at 9:54 a.m. and their origin was 10-15 km away from the previous test site near the town of Kilju, in the country’s northeast province of North Hamgyong.

The waves had a magnitude of 4.5 on the Richter Scale, compared to the previous 3.6, the agency said. The North said the second test was “higher” in terms of its explosive power and technology.

Analysts have said the previous test was a relatively small one with an explosive force of less than one kiloton.

The test results “helped satisfactorily settle the scientific and technological problems ... further increasing the power of nuclear weapons and steadily developing nuclear technology,” the report said.”

SNIPPET: “Yang also said North Korea appears to be expecting increased internal military unity as a result of the nuclear test.”

N. Korea couples nuclear blast with missile launch: source

By Sam Kim

SEOUL, May 25 (Yonhap) — North Korea appears to have test-fired a short-range missile Monday on its east coast after it conducted its second nuclear test, a South Korean source said.

The missile, with an estimated range of 130 kilometers, was fired from the coastal site where North Korea launched its long-range rocket on April 5, the source said.

The latest launch comes as tension peaks on the Korean Peninsula after North Korea claimed it succeeded in detonating a more powerful nuclear device in its northeastern region.

“The U.S. and South Korean authorities are working together to assess the missile launch,” the source said.

North Korea conducted its first nuclear test in October 2006.

“US investigator exposes Iran’s nuclear weapons ‘shopping list’”

SNIPPET: “A senior US financial investigator has revealed Iran’s detailed ‘shopping list’ for nuclear and missile parts after uncovering a vast procurement network for materials related to weapons of mass destruction.”

By Philip Sherwell in New York
Last Updated: 5:04PM BST 24 May 2009

SNIPPET: “The investigation has revealed that the Iranians were negotiating to buy 400 gyrometers, 600 accelerometers and 100 pieces of the metal tantalum - crucial technology for building accurate long-range missiles that could deliver nuclear payloads.

Mr Morgenthau’s unit, which has prosecuted several major US white-collar criminal cases, also established that LIMMT, a Chinese company that has long been a major supplier of banned weapons material to Iran, had shipped a long list of weapons-related materials to Iran after skirting international financial sanctions.

The items included 15,000 kgs of specialised aluminium alloy used almost exclusively in long-range missile production; 1,700 kgs of graphite cylinders used for banned electrical discharge machines; more than 30,000 kgs of tungsten-copper plates; 200 tungsten-copper alloy hollow cylinders; 19,000 kgs of tungsten metal powder and 24,500 kgs of maraging steel rods, which are favoured for their superior strength.”

SNIPPET: “The successful launch of the Sejil-2 rocket, which has an estimated 1,200 mile range and a new navigation system and sophisticated sensors, was further sign of its growing missile capacity, weapons experts said.

Iran is moving away from the liquid-fuelled Shahab-3 obtained from North Korea using Pakistani technology, to solid fuel rockets as they are easier to store, move, hide and assemble - and thus harder for Israel or others to target if they launched air strikes.”

It makes one wonder what North Korea’s shopping list is and where does it shop at.

“Breaking: Obama issues unusual middle-of-the-night statement — North Korea”

SNIPPET: “Statement from the President Regarding North Korea

Today, North Korea said that it has conducted a nuclear test in violation of international law. It appears to also have attempted a short range missile launch. These actions, while not a surprise given its statements and actions to date, are a matter of grave concern to all nations. North Korea’s attempts to develop nuclear weapons, as well as its ballistic missile program, constitute a threat to international peace and security.

By acting in blatant defiance of the United Nations Security Council, North Korea is directly and recklessly challenging the international community. North Korea’s behavior increases tensions and undermines stability in Northeast Asia. Such provocations will only serve to deepen North Korea’s isolation. It will not find international acceptance unless it abandons its pursuit of weapons of mass destruction and their means of delivery.

The danger posed by North Korea’s threatening activities warrants action by the international community. We have been and will continue working with our allies and partners in the Six-Party Talks as well as other members of the U.N. Security Council in the days ahead.”

“(LEAD) N. Korea fires missiles to threaten U.S. spy planes: official”

By Sam Kim

SNIPPET: “SEOUL, May 25 (Yonhap) — North Korea fired two additional short-range missiles Monday in an apparent move to threaten U.S. spy planes monitoring a site where the regime is believed to have conducted its second nuclear test, a South Korean official said.

“The launches took place at around 5:03 p.m.,” the official said, speaking on customary condition of anonymity. North Korea had earlier launched a surface-to-air missile around noon, hours after it said it detonated a nuclear device in an underground bunker.

“The latest missiles were fired from Wonsan, which isn’t too far from Taepodong, where the first one was launched,” the official said. “The launches appear to be a reaction to U.S. surveillance efforts.”

South Korean officials said they detected a tremor similar to “an artificial earthquake” registering a magnitude of 4.4 on the Richter scale at 9:54 a.m in the northeastern part of the communist neighbor.”

SNIPPET: “The South Korean military could not immediately identify the specifications of the latest missiles North Korea launched, the official said.

“What we can say for now is that they were short-range missiles,” the official said.”

“Japan, EU: NKorean nuke test violates UN sanctions”
By ERIC TALMADGE – 16 minutes ago
TOKYO (AP) —

SNIPPET: “In Brussels, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, Javier Solana, denounced the test as a flagrant violation of Security Council resolutions.

“These irresponsible acts by North Korea warrant a firm response by the international community,” Solana said in a statement. “The European Union will be in contact with its partners to discuss appropriate measures.”
French Foreign Ministry spokesman Eric Chevallier suggested the Security Council may discuss “the strengthening of sanctions.”

North Korea has been under U.N. sanctions that bar it from nuclear and ballistic activity since its first atomic test in 2006. A rocket launch in April — that the North said put a satellite into orbit but critics called a test of long-range missile technology — drew further condemnation from the world body.”
