I would have thought given all the seimograph-staring this would have been posted on. Absolutely nothing in the news regarding this.

I have the USGS location for this earthquake as being about 6-7 miles from the 2006 Korean Test, based on Google Earth.

EMSC has a slightly different location and an M 4.9.

The listed depth may not mean much because it's routinely guestimated for small, distant quakes.

I haven't been able to locate any nearby live seismograms that show it as anything more than a couple squiggles, thus can't see if it has the characteristic early big pulse of an explosion.

Anyway, a bit suspicious considering that part of North Korea is not particularly seimically active, it's very near the previous test location, and a 4.7-4.9 magnitude would be representative of a somewhat more successful test than in 2006.

Great Leader Kim Jong II must’ve told everybody to jump at the same time.

Or they just used more explosive this time and still got a fizzle...

Earthquakes are like

rumble rumble RUMBLE RUMBLE RUMBLE RUMBLE RUMBLE rumble rumble

Underground nuclear tests are more like:

.......RUMBLE RUMBLE RUMBLE rumble rumble

Experts can tell them apart.

Nuke test!

Looks like epicenter was very close to the 2006 nuke test:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_North_Korean_nuclear_test

It occurred at the geographic coordinates 41°17′38.4″N 129°08′2.4″E / 41.294°N 129.134°E / 41.294; 129.134 with a horizontal location uncertainty of ±9.6 km (6.0 miles). This is 73 km (45 miles) north of Kimchaek, 90 km (55 miles) southwest of Chongjin, 180 km (112 miles) south of Yanji, and 385 km (240 miles) northeast of Pyongyang.[36]

SNIPPET: “Among the threats he outlined were that Al Qaeda might seek new sanctuaries in countries such as Somalia and Yemen; that Iran was “at a minimum” keeping open the option to develop nuclear weapons; and that North Korea was willing to sell its nuclear technology to anyone willing to pay.”

Second nuke test by N. Korea would lead to ‘consequences’: Bosworth

By Lee Chi-dong

SEOUL, May 8 (Yonhap) — The senior U.S. nuclear envoy on Friday dismissed North Korea’s recent claim that the Obama administration is hostile towards Pyongyang, saying Washington is continuing efforts for bilateral and multilateral dialogue with the communist nation, On a trip here highlighted by the North’s renewed threats to bolster its nuclear arsenal, Stephen Bosworth made clear that if North Korea puts its threats into action, it will face “consequences.”

“If the North Koreans decide to carry out a second nuclear test, we will deal with the consequences of that, and there will be consequences,” Bosworth told reporters after talks with South Korean Foreign Minister Yu Myung-hwan on ways to resume the six-way talks on Pyongyang’s nuclear program. The negotiations also involve China, Russia, and Japan.

Bosworth said he and the minister discussed “possible steps forward” in the stalled denuclearization process but refused to elaborate.

So what would they want to do? Seizing NK bank accounts again, and later giving it back?
