Looks like another fizzle:

"A reading of 4.0 and 4.2 on the Richter scale would corresponding to a nuclear explosive yield of about 0.5 and 0.9 kt of TNT-equivalent, respectively, according to the above equation. Thus, the most easily obtained estimate of the size of the explosion is 0.5-0.9 kt. This is a yield given for small tactical nuclear warheads formerly in the American arsenal; and is a small fraction of the yield of first tests of other countries (19 kt US, 25 FSU, 25 UK, 60 France, 22 China, 12 India, ~9 Pakistan)."

President Obama said Sunday night (edited for brevity):

"Because of bad decisions made by the previous administration and eight years of failed policies, I now have another mess on my hands. I have enough on my plate without this situation, but now is not the time to argue the past, even though there were a lot of bad decisions that created this mess for my incoming administration, and it will force us to spend more money, even before we do what it takes to reform the health care system and cut deficits in half in ten years, after asking the top 1% of wage earners to forego the benefits they got from the failed policies of the past. Now we must make tough choices, such as doing nothing, as some argue, or investing in the future. Clearly, this situation demands shared sacrifice, which we will ask 1% of our population to pay for."

OK, he didn't say that. Yet.

With reported magnitudes of 4.7 from USGS and 4.9 from EMSC, this definitely wasn’t a fizzle.

The 2006 test was magnitude 4.2 - but remember the magnitude scale is logarithmic.

This test is on the scale of Hiroshima or Trinity.

Sure hope that the shaking didn’t frazzle the nerves of the spec ops men who have their laser sights on the Dear Leader!

Oops, sorry, we’re in the Obambi Administration, and we talk first.

Report: North Korea Conducts Nuclear Test
Sunday, May 24, 2009

Print ShareThisBREAKING NEWS — South Korean media are reporting that North Korea may have conducted a nuclear test.

YTN television is citing an unnamed government official and the Yonhap news agency cites a ruling party member as saying the nuclear test may have occured Monday morning.

South Korean President Lee Myung-bak has convened an emergency meeting.

North Korea had recently said it would again test a nuclear device — its first was in October 2006 — in reaction to tightened international sanctions after it fired a long-range rocket in April.

News of the test hit South Korean financial markets, sending the main KOSPI share index down four percent in late morning trade, while the won dropped more than 1 percent against the dollar.

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.
