Sotomayor: Gender, ethnicity should influence judges Posted: 11:58 AM ET
From CNN's Bill Mears, CNN's Robert Yoon
WASHINGTON (CNN) Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor said in a 2001 speech that a judge's gender and ethnicity does, and should, influence his or her decision-making on the bench.
Sotomayor made the comments on October 26, 2001, at a University of California-Berkeley symposium marking the 40th anniversary of the first Latino named to the federal district court.
"I wonder whether by ignoring our differences as women or men of color we do a disservice both to the law and society," she said at the event, sponsored by the law school. "I further accept that our experiences as women and people of color affect our decisions. The aspiration to impartiality is just that it's an aspiration because it denies the fact that we are by our experiences making different choices than others."
"Our gender and national origins may and will make a difference in our judging.

Gotta fill that empathy chair on the USSC
The more she open her mouth the more evidence that she should NOT be confirmed is being brought forth. that is very bad when you knock yourself out of a position.

I hate to go all tinfoil hat on your asses but, the fact that CNN is actually reporting this scares me. He picked her for a reason, and I honestly don’t know what it is, but I feel like it wasn’t with the intention of actually getting her confirmed.
Maybe I’m wrong, Karl Rove has been saying all day that they did this too quickly.
When the (former) President of Harvard played devils advocate and suggested differences between the sexes in math and science, he was run out of Cambridge. Do the views of this SCOTUS pick mean he can get his job back?
Line in the sand, he knows the Republicans won’t want her, and he is daring them to oppose her.
“When the (former) President of Harvard .....”
That would be a massive, massive pay cut for Larry.
“Sotomayor: Gender, ethnicity should influence judges”. I guess this means that justice is not blind. If so than injustice will rule the land, quickening the pace of the next revolution.
Somehow, I doubt she would see the male gender or one’s “lack of color” as a legitimate and positive influence on a judge’s judicial rulings.
The Democratic Party has always been the party of racism. Before about 1963 it was the party of white supremacy. Then under JFK and LBJ there was a flip-flop and they started using anti-white racism as a weapon, just like they had previously used anti-black racism.
It's to be expected that a Democratic President would pick someone who is an active proponent of anti-white racism and wants to extend its judicial impact.
White males voting for a Democrat are like chickens voting for Col. Sanders.
Sorry, but I don’t believe the headline is supported by her words. She says it DOES influence judges, and that SINCE it does influence judges, we should value diversity in our selection of judges. What’s scary with what she has stated isn’t even its implicit support for affirmative action. Rather, she could justify nullifying precedent when and only when she sees fit to. Will she assert, “Well, yes, that’s precedent, but it was established by a court without adequate minority representation”? Senators need to probe that question. But she is NOT saying, as the title would imply, that judges should base their decisions of gender and ethnic considerations. That’s not to say she doesn’t think that, either.
Links like this are useful for debating our liberal/leftist “friends”, relatives, business associates, etc., because most, when provided a link from say, NewsBusters or Human Events online will bleat, “That's a neo-con shill site”, and dismiss it at that.
However, on the rare occasions when CNN and the MSM networks do report the actual news, such citations are like gold, when facing the enemy in debate.
So thanks for this find. It's a bookmark!
Then she can’t complain if someone stereotypically says of her actions:: “Just like a woman!” or “What do you expect from a P.R.?”
I believe the headline is supported by her words, specifically when she is quoted by CNN as saying, “I wonder whether by ignoring our differences as women or men of color we do a disservice both to the law and society,”.
I think the implication is clear: She believes that by “ignoring our differences as women or men of color we” meaning judges “do a disservice to the law and society”, therefore, she does believe, as the title states, “Gender, ethnicity should influence judges”.
Quota Politics, but of course we don’t call it that.
A twofer with a Latina!
Based on this specious reasoning, no jury or judge is valid for anybody unless the former are individuals of similar ethnicity.
That’s one big can o’worms.
But the left has insisted for decades that gender and ethnicity would not effect judges opinions and that anyone who thought they would were racists.
What happened to the 14th Amendment?
She’s the anti-Martin Luther King.
