I'm slightly surprised that the White House press office gave out this image, from her 1976 Princeton yearbook, in which she quotes Norman Thomas.
Norman Thomas was, of course, the leading American Socialist politician of the 20th century. Perhaps they figured it would come out eventually so they wanted to be able to say, "That's old news. We thought it was so inconsequential, we mentioned it ourselves." Or perhaps they felt that substantively didn't matter; Norman Thomas was a pretty mainstream and respected figure, as socialists went. And his quote is universal. Or perhaps they didn't notice.

“Homage to Catalonia” is a great read. Orwell had a very difficult time getting it published because he discovered that the communist press, even in the UK, was controlled out of Moscow.
Thanks for posting, very informative, some are dismissing the quote as innocuous. To me it sounds like she has an aggressive agenda.
If I had a question to ask her it would be “what causes haven’t you won yet?” Or “what causes do you think as an impartial SC Justice still need to be won?”
I have always thought that had Orwell lived (he was born several days after Bob Hope, but died in 1950), he would have liked American-style capitalism. He was planning a trip to the US but died before he got here.
The White House is merely demonstrating that her lack of intellectual depth was in evidence as early as 1976.

Have either of you read Christopher Hitchins’, “Why Orwell Matters”. I have it in my library but wanted to read more Orwell before reading it.

I’ve read it. The content is good, but Hitchens needs a good editor and this book needs it as well. He is not a tight, concise writer. But I still recommend it.

The main thing that the average Joe out there, may not realize is that he/she may eventually the target of discrimination. Being blamed for "rich old white men" now long gone- real wrongs or imaginary . The phrase used in England and Canada generally by certain, not all minority groups was:
"Now it's our turn".

Yes, far too early and they did everything for him. His lungs in an awful state. Just in case it is not known and posters might be interested, strings were pulled and the miracle drug- streptomycin was shipped from the United States. The dosage was wrong at the British end, and they thought he was allergic to the drug.

What I take from her blurb is that she never seems to be a self directed person.
She always refers to the experiences of others as responsible for her make-up.

She has much worse quotes to cook her goose which conservatives are focused on. This is nothing on purpose. I think it is intentionally nothing. It could be EXTRA STUPID people with a tin ear, though. Hey stupid or evil -whichever one gave the Left his, leave politics to the adults and you resume navel gazing.
Traditionally, Senators bring forward nominees for the Presdient to nominate, or at least consider nomniating. Sotomayor was the idea of the late Daniel Patrick Moynihan, and fellow Senator Alfonse D’Amato, locked in a close race, signed on. Then-President Bush simply went along.
Do you remember the story about his shoes? He had enormous feet and had a hard time getting boots. Finally, someone here (someone rather well known IIRC, although I forget who it was) got him boots and sent them to England. I always thought that if he had visited here and saw how capitalism worked here as opposed to how it seemed to be working in the UK, and how the system produced what he needed (boots), that he might have a change of heart. He WAS a patriot and was not afraid to look squarely at things and call them as he saw them.
Thank you for the story about the drugs. I do remember it now that you reminded me. Orwell was a world treasure and it’s too bad he died so young.
Have you heard anything about who received the copyright to Animal Farm? I tried to learn more about that when I wrote my senior thesis on him, but was never able to find out more than some rumors.
