Sen. Cornyn shuns Limbaugh and Gingrich, calls it "terrible" to accuse Judge Sotomayor of racism

Sen. John Cornyn tonight repudiated the allegation that Judge Sonia Sotomayor is "racist" - and he distanced himself in no uncertain terms from the conservative opinion leaders who leveled that charge against the Supreme Court nominee, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and talk show host Rush Limbaugh.

"I think it's terrible. This is not the kind of tone that any of us want to set when it comes to performing our constitutional responsibilities of advice and consent," Cornyn told NPR's "All Things Considered." The racism allegation - and efforts to pressure Sotomayor to withdraw from consideration for the court - stem from Sotomayor's remark that as a Latina, she would bring a superior perspective to some cases than a white male judge.

Asked by NPR if he's worried that comments like Limbaugh and Gingrich's harm the confirmation debate, Cornyn said: "Neither one of these men are elected Republican officials. I just don't think it's appropriate and I certainly don't endorse it. I think it's wrong."

The interview offered a preview of Sunday's

I’d think discussing whether someone going to the SCOTUS is racist is PRECISELY what you want to discuss when performing the duty of advise and consent.

Lets ask Cornyn about his support for Spectre just days before the man flipped? He has some bad judgement.

Perhaps Cornyn wasn’t aware that she is a card-carying member of the racist separatist group La Raza (”The Race”).
It is odd that he would be so quick to pass judgement before even reviewing her background.

I'm gonna have to start wondering if they're in on this deal to turn the country over to socialism! If they were told not to worry, they can keep their stuff, or they'd still get to have "roles" in the government, token power, or what. They just won't stand up for anything, no matter how legitimate!

I agree with Rush’s and Newt’s assessment of Sotomayor but I agree with Cornyn that it should not be used to decide whether to support her nomination or not.

There are four issues that they should however pursue:

1)her attitude towards the Second Amendment

2)her belief on whether policy should be made from the bench

3)her belief on whether affirmative action should play a role in what decision she comes up with in deciding a case

4)her views of free speech

Ahhhhhhhhh......I see. Therefore they're not part of the Great Elected Ones and have no right to their opinions?

They should not have the right to care about their country? The Constitution?

Got it, Loser.

John Cornyn on Budget & Economy:
Inaction on $700B bailout is unacceptable leadership. (Oct 2008)
Voting for $700B bailout demonstrates leadership. (Oct 2008)

Otherwise good.

its her views on all of the Bill of Rights.

whether or not she thinks a court has a duty to be blind to race and socio-economic circumstances of the litigants

those are the biggies. But if she is a racist then I think that Rush and Newt should be, they are not holding office, perfect to flog that

OF COURSE Sotomayor is a racist. The proof is not only in her comments about being superior to “white males”, but in her judicial ruling against the white firefighters and her subsequent attempts to obstruct justice in the case.

Sotomayor is a racist just as surely as Cornyn is a coward.

And even though you agree with Rush and Newt, you don’t don’t seem to think that her attitude directly impacts those four things? Maybe if you think a little deeper like Rush and Newt, you might come to a different conclusion....

1)She has already made judgments against the ownership of firearms.

2)She has stated that is the perfect place to make policy.

3)Can a racist of a minority background do anything, but......????

4)Not sure.

5)Racism coming from a white person would be viewed as exactly what it is and be denied entry into the supreme court. This applies here as well.
