With this week's nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the U.S. Supreme Court and a debate swirling around the relevance of her background to the bench, U.S. District Judge Ricardo Martinez figured he might get a few calls from local media. Sotomayor Sotomayor

Martinez is the Northwest's first Hispanic federal judge.

And yes, he said. That matters.

"We talk about how justice should be blind, and I think so, yes, absolutely. But every person that shows up in a courtroom should be able to see themselves reflected in the person up there making these calls," he said.

"If you're born to a very well to do family, go to private school your whole life, go through law school, Yale, you graduate, you come out, become a judge -- it doesn't gonna mean you're going to be a bad judge. But do you truly understand what it's like to put yourself to school? To have to work two jobs?"

“comments misunderstood”

Now THERE’S an endorsement for a jurist whose every word can be a critical measure of our liberties.

Tell it to Miguel Estrada.

But do you truly understand what it's like to put yourself to school? To have to work two jobs?"

And what does this have to do with what the law says about the case?

U.S. District Judge Ricardo Martinez seems very ignorant of Voir dire.

“But every person that shows up in a courtroom should be able to see themselves reflected in the person up there making these calls”

Yeah, well, see, that’s just not possible, bonehead.

I can understand the idea that everyone has their little group represented somewhere in the system. But to expect your very own judge to be up there when you show up? How convoluted would scheduling that be?

Or to expect that your little clique should be represented in SCOTUS? There are only so many spots. A Cambodian or an Iranian will show up, and we’ll just have to say, sorry, we haven’t got to you yet.

Why didn’t she just go in the back yard and peel some dough of the Money Tree that all White families have?

Yeah, judge, sure do! I put several people through school all by myself. How do these Latinos think they are the only ones who ever struggled in this country?

Good grief!

so by his logic, a child molesting, axe-wielding mass murderer should be able to see himself reflected in his judge?

So if she's that bad at clearly communicating her opinions then we definitely don't need that person in such a crucial position where doing such is a must.

“He understands why it’s an issue with those scrutinizing Sotomayor, but objects to the “inflammatory partisanship” he said has already flooded the debate over her suitability with dishonest arguments and shallow opinions.”

It reads like this other judge (brought her illegally at age five? but accepting and enjoying the blessings of everything this country has to offer) really wants to play the race card against anyone concerned about Sotomayor saying in her speech (for which she presumably had time to prepare) that a “wise Latina woman with the richness of her experience would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life” ...
buuuuut maybe he’s afraid he’ll be misunderstood as well.

I’ve been lookin’ for that thing for 60 years! I found one...it was marked “affirmative action only need apply”.

This is all garbage. Justice is blindfolded. Now the groupies want to raise the blindfold and play identity justice.

We have been getting screwed by the courts for years, and some voters still do not get the connection between libs and the courts. I am sure many hispanics feel all warm and fuzzy about having one of their own on the bench. They and other victim groups just don't get it that identity politics and identity justice distorts the law and whittles away our freedoms, including their own--whittles, heck--by now they are carving up justice with a chain saw.

“’But do you truly understand what it’s like to put yourself to school? To have to work two jobs?’”

Yes. Well, not two jobs. One full-time job, though.

Whenever it came up with a teacher or a school official, which wasn’t very often since I don’t tell people my business, They were aghast. How is that possible, they asked. School is supposed to be a full time job. You’re expected to spend two hours of outside study for every hours of class, or whatever it is they say. Look, lady, if you really want everyone to have a higher education, and if college life is for everyone, then why on earth would you be so surprised to hear we have to work? Since when can everyone afford to pay your rapidly rising tuition rates and eat and live off campus (in privacy, away from your artificial universe)?

We should ask Sotomayer if she agrees with this judge and supporter of hers that every defendant has a right to request a judge that is the same race, gender, and religion has the defendant. After all, how could I possibly see myself reflected in someone who doesn't look like me?

who cares what hardships you may have encountered growing up. When you are a Judge in a court room you don't make decisions of LAW based on how you were raised or the hardships you encountered. This is just insane!

They don't make judges like they used to.
