Judge Sotomayor, Empathize This!
The American Thinker ^ | May 30, 2009 | Matthew May

We are told by our betters to accept prima facie Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor's quite astonishing statement that the "richness" of her experience and derivative empathy automatically leads to better legal reasoning. Fine, let's accept it for a moment. But what exactly is so rich about her experience?

A cursory look at her biography and resume reveals a conceit that seems quite common to the elite left: their self-promotion as cosmopolitan savants in an attempt to veil their narrow provincialism.

Of course, Sotomayor's mother and extended family should be applauded for their sacrifices and hard work in making sure little Sonia was given every advantage in her primary education. Unlike many of her neighbors in the Bronx, Sotomayor benefited from Catholic schooling, rather than enduring the corrupt and decrepit halls of a public school system hell-bent on destroying its captive pupils. Such grounding prepared her well for Princeton and Yale. This is a similar foundation that the president who nominated her denied a generation of "richly experienced" children in Washington, D.C.

Sotomayor's work experience is inarguably impressive. She has been a judge, an assistant district attorney on the fastest legal track in the world, adjunct faculty at New York University, and lecturer at Columbia University. But what seems to be the common thread in this rich experience? Mainly the states of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut -- has she ever ventured outside the tri-state area for any significant amount of time? Aside from those awkward speeches at Berkeley and Duke, of course.

Considering her previous statements and if she is confirmed, it will be interesting to see how she will be accepted by the other jurist especially the “White Men” on the SC. She will probably be the first to file a sexual/racial oriented lawsuit against a setting judge of the SC.

If I were a Republican interviewing Sotomayor for the Supreme Court Justice I would simply ask her “What is your opinion of The Duke Rape Case?”

What would her answer be and what kind of level of discomfort would she have in the process?

I’d ask her to retire.

Apologies in advance if I offend but from where I sit I’m having a hard time seeing what wisdom hispanic attitudes are going to bring to my highest court. Looking over the list of quote unquote hispanic countries, there’s not a lot to get excited about. Wisdom compared to what? The only wisdom I’m seeing from hispanics is the wisdom to get the hell out of their own heartless and hopeless homeland and come here.

I agree with you.

The greatest wisdom was that of our founding fathers. Unfortunately I don’t think this woman intends to adhere to their philosophy.

"I have a dream: that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character." - Dr. Martin Luther King

The nomination of this reverse racist not only does a disservice to our nation, but it also lessens the credibility of the civil rights movement itself.

Good question; wonder if she made any statement during that unfolding.

no offense to those who haven’t, but has she reared even one child, let alone several while balancing the demands of work and family? I haven’t read anything about her family connections other than that she has a mother, and had a father who died when she was young.

Apologies in advance if I offend but from where I sit I’m having a hard time seeing what wisdom hispanic attitudes are going to bring to my highest court.

My son is moreno and half Latino (all American.) He looks very, very dark and has obvious South American features. Yet he sounds like an engineer when you talk to him - Cub Scout, Honor Student and generally bright kid. His name on paper suggests he would turn invisible standing next to a white wall.

He is a direct result of the American melting pot.

How would Sotomayor deliber justice to him? Will she prejudge him by his name on a paper and condemn him for being white? Will she see him in court and rule in his favor because he's brown? Will she talk to his mother and empathize with Latino's instead of delivering equal justice? Or will she wait until he opens his mouth and decide "Let's throw the book at Beaver Cleaver there..." when he corrects her for her English (which he has an annoying habit of doing and being right most of the time...brat.)

Sotomayor is a step backwards, not forward for equal justice in this nation.

Racial preference and "Latina Wisdom" will not deliver the dream of equality but damn us all to the hell of racial bias and outright racism.

She cannot be permitted to take a seat in the SCOTUS. She will set our nation back years.

She achieved the expectations of those who worked to provide her with greater opportunity, just has been done by others for a couple of centuries in this nation.
What she has achieved is standard fare for American’s of Asian, Black, and European heritage.
