Letter: The 'wise Latina' (Judge Sotomayor)
The Salt Lake Tribune ^ | May 29, 2009 | Greg Rampton

Posted on 05/30/2009 8:23:10 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Imagine Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor sitting in a jury pool for a gender and racial discrimination case involving a minority woman who is suing her employer. During jury selection, plaintiff and defense attorneys closely question each prospective juror concerning their background and views on racial and gender issues.

In response to an attorney's question as to whether she can reach a fair and unbiased decision based only on the facts, Sotomayor responds: "I would hope that a wise Latina, such as I, with the richness of her experience would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life."

"That life" presumably means having seen or experienced discrimination up close and personal. In other words, her decision would be based not only on the facts but upon her personal experiences with discrimination; that is, on unrelated incidents not admissible as evidence.

Would Sotomayor be dismissed from the jury pool? You bet. Sotomayor couldn't serve on a jury under these circumstances, but President Obama wants to put her on the Supreme Court? Where's the justice? Obama can nominate a better "first Hispanic" Supreme, if that's his goal.

Just imagine how Sotomayor will treat the white male lawyers who come before her to present their cases!

I getting sick of this "Latino-a" thing. What is her ancestry from? Is she PUERTO RICAN? MEXICAN? SAN VADOREnA?

Let's find out where she is from and let's call her what she is. Latina is too general of a term

One could call her Puerto Rican but since she’s essentially a New Yorker with Puerto Rican ancestry the slang term is “New Yorican.”

People who actually were born in Puerto Rico call people born on the mainland “New Yoricans”.

As for me, based on her ideas perhaps she should be known as Sonia Sotomayor Che Guevara Castro Chavez.

I think they ought to ask her about Puerto Rican independence. That’s a Castro inspired movement from way back that’s been involved in terrorism.

I think it is funny (or sad) that most Americans are trying to give Obama the benefit of the doubt when in fact he is a hard core Marxist tyrant who wishes nothing but devastation to the USA. Both cultural and economic devastation.

Sotomayor is a racist, but so is Obama. Biden is a pro-union fool that understands nothing about the economic chaos he is enabling.

These are just plain evil people. Americans had better wake up before its too late.

She is Puerto Rican and that means she is a US citizen, her parents are also US citizens, not immigrants as the MSM tries to paint them.

Is this woman so into herself that she doesn’t realize many other people have had rich life experiences; probably more so than her. After all; she sounds like affirmative action helped her just like it did Michele Obama who hates whitey and her country?

I’m an Italian who was born in New York. What does that make me, a New Ginny or a Wop Yorker?

Give me a break. Identity Politics only works for Democrats.

I also believe this administration is confusing empathy with sympathy. Sympathy never gets you anywhere.

...One could call her Puerto Rican but since she’s essentially a New Yorker with Puerto Rican ancestry the slang term is “New Yorican.”...

Latino is a general term these **holes of the media use to bunch us all together. But the terms "Latino-a" and "Hispanic" have different connotations.

Is an Argentinian or Peruvian a Latino or Hispanic? Are these nambes based on the native language?... Education... Position..... Color of sking.... Ancestry....accent?... of a combination of all of them?

Ask anyone from a spanish speaking country what they are... And they will invaribly refer to themselves as "Mexican" or "Venezuelan" or "Chilean" or "Costa Rican" etc, etc, etc. The term Lation is a "convinient" name for the Left to bunch us all as leftists :)

Obama can nominate a better "first Hispanic" Supreme, if that's his goal...If that's his goal, then he's too late - Benjamin Cardoza was technically the first "Hispanic" justice (Spanish/Portugese family background) - wrong again, Obama.......

You hit it right on the head because there are so many people in my town from so many different countries like the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Cuba and Mexico, among others.

Their skin color shades are so different with European and Indian ancestry mixed in.

In Venezuela, Comrade Chavez divides people into the ligher and darker skin shades to create victims he is saving through his “socialist revolution.”

The MSM-Left is trying to create a group called “Latina” that they can annoint spokespeople for the oppressed “Latina” population who are Leftists.

I agree.

We should call her a PUERTO RICAN from New York City. Many NewYorRicans, consider themselves PUERTO RICANS, hence the flag of Puerto Rico.

We should start an educational campaign stating something like...

"Don't let the media bamboozle you... Calling **SOTO MAYOR** a LATINA is not accurate.

She is a PUERTO RICAN born in NEW YORK CITY. The term "Latina" is used by the Left media to convert her into a "Joan of Arc" for all the dishwashers / Hotel cleaners... in the U.S."
