Freest States
Mercatus ^ | 2009

William P. Ruger - assistant professor in the Department of Political
Science at Texas State University. He is currently on military leave, serving in the U.S. Navy in Afghanistan. Ruger earned his PhD in politics from Brandeis University and an AB from the College of William and Mary.

Jason Sorens - assistant professor of Political Science at the University
at Buffalo, State University of New York. He received his doctorate in political science in 2003 from Yale University, and his research focuses on secessionism, ethnic politics, and comparative federalism. His work has also appeared in Regional and Federal Studies, Comparative Political Studies, Nationalism and Ethnic Politics, and State Politics and Policy Quarterly.

By summing the economic freedom and personal freedom scores, we obtain the overall freedom index, presented below. New Hampshire comes out on top as the freest state in the United States.

It achieved this ranking due to its excellent fiscal policies and moderate levels of regulation and paternalism. However, as with all of the states, even New Hampshire has room for improvement, and post-2006 political changes in that state may mean that its ranking in this study will fall the next time we update the data and rankings.

Colorado, South Dakota, Idaho, and Texas round out the top five. The
first three states in the rankings are clumped tightly together, and thus citizens of all three states should be pleased to live in the freest states in the Union. On the other hand, many states perform quite poorly in providing a liberty-friendly environment for their citizens. New York is the least free by a considerable margin. This will surprise few residents of the
Empire state. In order from the bottom, New York is followed by New Jersey, Rhode Island, California, and Maryland.

Unfortunately, these states make up a substantial portion of the total American population. Moreover, these bottom five states have considerable ground to make up even to move off this ignoble list, let alone into a creditable position in the rankings. Individual state profiles below provide more information about these ten states as well as the others in between.

As a present Colorado resident, and having lived in California, Florida, Maryland, and originally Indiana, I think the high Colorado ranking is accurate.

We freeze our butts off all winter long paying extraordinary heat bills and then the minute the weather gets better, the New York City thieves come up and take our lakes away from us.

ya'll allow it.. Not enforcing voter i.d. Giving a wink and a nod to union thugs. (teachers, firemen, longshoremen, police...) milking the system. Tolerating taxes and fees without standing up and just saying no.

I've been to New York and almost without fail the people I've met think that Texas is backwards, stupid and full of racists. Only the smart people are compassionate enough to spend other people's money to be "tolerant and generous" to the less fortunate. I f'ing hate the pious hand grasped holier than thou liberal compassionate bullsh#t.

We're getting those same parasites here in Texas. Starts in Austin with all the libs telling the majority of Texans that we need to "spend more " for the children and less fortunate. They are trying to enslave parasite nipple people that love the government tit just like they did in New Orleans, Detroit, Newark, Boston, Oakland, Chicago.... and every other democrat sh#t hole.

The only way is to organize and get in the face of the thugs and voter fraud perps.

It won't matter, cause after the census is rigged this time they'll have 10 years to codify the fake populations of the northeast and liberal democrat states.

Like Lennin said the man the counts the votes wins the election. That's why elections are fake now. There is NO democrat majority. Just fake votes over key districts that due to our representative democracy allow the thieves to stay in power and screw us.

I'm trying to get as far back into Texas as I can. If I never set foot in New York it'll be no loss to me. I'm sure that most New Yorkers feel the same way to Texas.

It would be my wish for Texans to disgust New Yorkers and all libs so much that they would kick us out of the union. They would be better off......... and so would we.

I agree with you. New York State rots now. I don’t think we who live upstate think of Texans as hicks. We are ruled by the foreigners in New York City. The real Americans upstate have no say. Now they are filling the cities that they cleared out of Americans with muslims and every other TURD world cast off they can find. Texas came one inch from being recked last year because they were going to plunk the North American Super Highway there. Don’t let the lib tards reck Texas because I need to have a place to move to. It’s a bad scene man!

On average red states did better than blue states. Can’t say I’m surprised.
