Barack Obama is playing paint by the numbers.
With his selection of Sonia Sotomayor, Obama has validated the philosophy of former US Senator Roman Hruska (R-Ne). Hruska defended the unsuccessful nomination of G. Harrold Carswell to serve on the US Supreme Court by stating: [T]here are a lot of mediocre judges and people and lawyers. They are entitled to a little representation, arent they, and a little chance? We cant have all Brandeises, Frankfurters and Cardozoes.
For the diversity minded, Benjamin Cardozo, who served as an Associate Justice of the US Supreme Court following a noteworthy judicial career in New York, was the first Latino to serve on the high court. Cardozo was of Portugese and Spanish ancestry.
