Sotomayor to make debut with lawmakers

WASHINGTON (AP) - Sonia Sotomayor gets her first chance Tuesday to make an impression on senators who will vote on her confirmation as the first Hispanic Supreme Court justice, kicking off what could be a long debate over seating her on the highest U.S. court.

Sotomayor's schedule is packed with quick one-on-one visits with some of the Senate's leading members. The roughly half-hour meetings, known as «courtesy calls,» are as important for the courtly tone they set for the beginning of the Court.

Sotomayor is meeting with 10 senators in all during her first day at Congress, retreating to Vice President Joe Biden's office in between to huddle with the White House team, heavy with veterans of confirmation battles, that is guiding her confirmation.

Prominent on Sotomayor's list of visits are the leader of the Senate's Democratic majority, Sen. Harry Reid; Republican Minority Leader Mitch McConnell; and their seconds-in-command, Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin and Republican Sen. Jon Kyl.
She also will begin her rounds with members of the Judiciary Committee, which will hold the high-profile hearings on her confirmation. First will be Sen. Patrick Leahy, the Democratic committee chairman, and Sen. Jeff Sessions, the senior Republican. Others include Democrat Dianne Feinstein and Republican Orrin Hatch.
Rounding out her schedule are visits with the Democratic senators from New York, her home state. Sotomayor will lunch with Sen. Charles E. Schumer, her unofficial chaperone during the confirmation process, and visit Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand.
The White House's efforts to promote President Obama's narrative about Sotomayor began the day he named her a week ago: a seasoned federal judge who overcame hardship as a youngster and would deliver justice...

Any Republican Senator who votes for Sotomayor's confirmation should be challenged in their next primary by someone who does have principles.

Well we will see what they do this time.

In the past they always vote for the democrat’s nominee to be polite

I think Ginsberg got 95 yes votes.

The republicans are such wimps, they think capitulating to the democrats will make them like them. LOL

I wish one of them would ask Mz. Sotomayor if she had ever met a wise latina man.
She should be rejected for sloppy English and sloppy Spanish to boot!

So we have a Supreme Court nominee whose rulings have been overturned 60% of the time. Shows that Obama believes in rewarding failure.

On TV yesterday one of Sotomayors sycophants said she has only been overturned 3 times?

What's up with that?

Maybe they meant that three of the four times she has had a case reviewed by the Supremes, she has been overturned. That's a 75% reversal....rather poor IMHO.

Probably she was overturned many times before she was an appeals court judge. If the so-called news media was interested in informing the public of facts, we would know.

Thanks, I was flamboozled when I hear the 3 figure and knew it was a made up or out of context talking point!

She has a horrible record, and this case now where she didn't let whites get promoted because no blacks passed the test is despicable!

She is definitely a racist and a radial feminist leftist.

I think you'll find that's about average. As I recall, the Supreme Court reverses about 75% of the cases it takes.

That's true. But Scalia was confirmed 98-0. The two absentions were Goldwater and Garn, so call it 100-0.

But even since Ginsburg, things have gotten a LOT more political. In a lot of respects, it's too bad. There are qualified candidates who have no interest in participating in today's confirmation process.

I just think all politicians should be honest and vote from that base instead of all this bipartisan foolishness.

LOL I just looked at what I typed (I just think all politicians should be honest) LOLOL I need a reality check!
