WASHINGTON The Senate's top Democrat praised federal judge Sonia Sotomayor Tuesday as an extraordinarily well-qualified Supreme Court nominee whose background as an "underdog" appeals to Americans.
"We have the whole package here," said Sen. Harry Reid, seated beside Sotomayor as the two began a meeting in his Capitol office. He called her life story "compelling."
"America identifies with the underdog, and you've been an underdog many times in your life," .. He said she has been tested many times in her life and always emerged as the "top dog."

She just feeeeeels so right for the job, I get tingly feeeelings running up and down my leg everytime I think of how she had to persevere against all odds... and how high she has risen. ‘Compelling’ .. wow. (/Reid)
Harry is a ‘white male’ so his opinion has no merit.
She doesn’t have an “underdog” story. That is a fiction put out by the White house. She had an excellent PRIVATE SCHOOL EDUCATION (Catholic, I believe), and then attended to expensive and prestigious colleges on her way to her pick of jobs because she was both Hispanic and Female, thus providing any employer TWO diversity chits.
Yes, she was one of millions of children who suffered some sort of parental difficulties, but that hardly makes her uniquely qualified for anything.
Hey, keep that diversity chit to yurself. Uhhh. ;-)
I wonder what the Founding Fathers would have to say about her life experience. They knew a little about being ‘underdogs’ too.
So, she's brilliant, but after every single interview, she has to run home to her handlers so she can debrief and find out how many things she said wrong to fix the mistakes.
I wonder how many times she'll run to her handlers when she has to decide a Supreme Court case.
You can fill a Prada purse full of horse manure and it's still just a bag of $#!T.
The article falsely assumes that if seven republicans voted for her before, they would also vote for her for the Supreme Court.
I don’t remember that coming up when Bush nominated sitting judges for appeals court positions. In fact, I remember the papers echoing Schumer’s claims that “higher courts require much more scrutiny”.
great, the White house chooses a nominee based on a movie called “Rocky”
“”thus providing any employer TWO diversity chits””
Can someone please tell me when we’ve had diversity shoved down our throats, we still have to listen to politicians judge people by their diverse backgrounds? They got diversity - now shut up about it! The same people “WHO MADE IT” make it their life’s work to tell OTHERS they CAN’T make it WITHOUT THEM! Are there any sensible people/answers anymore?
Not her background.
Hey Reid - if you like underdog stories how about that Ricci guy? He had to overcome dyslexia in order to pass the exam to be promoted, and “underdog” Sodomizer threw him under the white people bus.
A “compelling narrative” trumps the law when democrats rule.
Well, she is the whole racist package. She also is the whole Marxist package. No wonder Reid approves.
Great, a Supreme Court Justice that perjures herself upon taking the Oath of Office...
Oh sure. Affirmative action has been in force for years, and now the White House, both houses of Congress, and the courts are in the hands of the Left, and she's an underdog.
Yep...she's Che Guevara and David Duke all rolled into one.
Yeah, the whole package - like 3 pounds of S*#t in a 2-pound bag.
A whole package of Marxist totalitarianism.
