A pair of boys ages 12 and 14 using their BB guns at Penn Park in Madison on Memorial Day frightened park-goers and drew police attention because their guns looked real. Madison police reported the 12-year-old reached for his gun, which was stuck in his pants, when confronted by an officer who had drawn his gun.
The BB gun resembled a semi-automatic handgun, and the two were cited for unlawful use of a facsimile firearm.

That should be early on the gun safety list. A 12 year old holding a BB gun that looks like an automatic in public is likely to get shot. We have one of those BB guns at home and my boy knows better than that.
All things formerly considered normal and healthy for boys have been banned because those things mold boys into the kind of men who reject radical feminists,socialism,homosexuality, and gaia worship.
It’s a different world today. In the “old days” we didn’t have a lot of gangs and teen shootings. I figure most people would show concern about teens running around a park with what looked like guns. That said, boys can still be molded into responsible men. Dads, or male role models can still teach gun safety and shooting skills at ranges, etc.

Spud cannons are good—very large caliber round. Maybe about a 90 mm?
My 9 year old has just graduated from BB guns to a pretty powerful .177 air rifle. It falls into the category of way cool—the bottles break real good.

Today the guns look like the real thing. They call them air soft and they are replica’s of the real thing from Uzi’s to AK 47’s and AR 16’s. Geeeez, wish they were around back then. I would have settled for a Thompson SMG or a M 1911 in that era.
Actually, the stupid kid was lucky he didn’t get shot for reaching for the replica. Sounds like the officer did a good job.
You need a new design for that tripod mounting. You can only adjust elevation, but you can’t turn it.

There is still utilitarian value to the .177 pellet rifle. I recently bought one (a ‘you pump it up’ version—to off a pesky woodpecker who pecked a nice 3” diameter hole in my shingled roof, right at the bottom of a roof valley, which allowed water to pour into my entry hall and garage, costing me thousands of dollars for repairs inside and outside. The woodpecker was dispatched with extreme prejudice ... and any relative will be dealt with similarly if they make a single peck on my roof!

A agree. I have several thousand “hunting” rounds for the 177. Very cheap and easy to store. I things ever went south, it’s a fine small-game hunting rifle (1000 fps with one pump and quite a bit more than that with two). Of course, it doesn’t replace a shotgun. But I’d still be using the .177 long after I ran out of ammo for the shotgun.

Given that Daisy made semi-auto rifles largely out of plastic, I'm not sure how one would have told a BB gun from "the real thing" back then. On the other hand, I think police back then had sufficient visual acuity to tell whether a projectile weapon was pointed at someone in threatening fashion. If someone was pointing a firearm-like object at another person who seemed to be threatened by it, regard it as a gun. If two people are pointing and shooting firearm-like objects at each other, but they don't seem to particularly mind getting hit, regard as non-gun.
