Not all R.I.’ers, Americans support same-sex marriage

PROVIDENCE — California is not the only state to oppose same-sex marriage. According to a new USA Today/ Gallup poll, the majority of Americans continue to oppose gay marriage.

Gallup found 57 percent of Americans oppose legalizing same-sex marriage.

On May 26, the California Supreme Court ruled that gay marriage will remain banned in the state of California, upholding Proposition 8, which declares that “only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California." Those who married before the initiative was passed will not be affected by this decision.

Researchers at Brown University released a poll on Wednesday, May 27, which stated that most Rhode Island voters favor same-sex marriage by a margin of 60 percent to 31 percent, according to a new statewide survey conducted. The survey expressed that 75 percent would be in favor of a law allowing civil unions for same-sex couples.

According to the poll conducted by Brown's Taubman Center for Public Policy, adults age 60 and over generally oppose same-sex marriage. The poll showed 49 percent of 60 to 69-year-olds support same-sex marriage, and 32 percent of people 70 and older support the idea.

The U.S. Census Bureau reported that 77.1 percent of registered Rhode Island voters age 55 and over voted in the 2006 congressional elections. It reported that 46.3 percent of registered voters between the ages of 18 to 24 voted in the 2006 elections.

Christopher C. Plante, The Rhode Island Executive Director of the National Organization for Marriage explained that he respects the Brown poll, but does not believe it.

“National data gathered by Quinnipiac College demonstrated that 55 percent of Americans oppose same-sex marriage,” said Plante. “In California, polls showed voters supported same-sex marriage, but it did not turn out that way. We look forward to demonstrating that voters in Rhode Island, like voters in California, and 29 other states do not want marriage redefined to accommodate a small minority.”

The Taubman Center poll didn't reveal major differences between men and women on marriage, but showed a major divide between generations. Brown's poll showed 60 percent of women and 59 percent of men support same-sex marriage in the Ocean State.

But the poll showed 87 percent of 18 to 29 year olds support same-sex marriage and 70 percent of 30 to 39 year olds back gay marriage.

The Taubman Center poll revealed major differences along political lines on same-sex marriage as well. Seventy-seven percent of Democrats support gay marriage in Rhode Island, but only 28 percent of Republicans support it.

Meanwhile, 56 percent of independents said they would support a law to redefine the definition of marriage.

Father John Codega, pastor of Christ the King Church in West Warwick and National Organization for Marriage — Rhode Island advisory board member said that it is evident that the California judges upheld the will of the people.

“Last year in California the judges ruled in favor of gay marriage and then the people voted and the judges backed them," said Father Codega on the vote to keep Proposition 8 intact in the Golden State. “This is not a civil-rights issue.”

Pleased that the California Supreme Court upheld Proposition 8, Plante added that he felt the poll by Brown was skewed by the opinions of the younger generations.

“It is unfortunate that so many of Rhode Island's young people are unaware of the fallacy that claims the same-sex marriage debate is about fairness, equality, civil rights, or justice,” said Plante. “No one wants to be on the wrong side of these labels, or to be called a bigot. However, the fact is, the same-sex marriage movement is about a small minority of people trying to radically alter the historic definition of marriage to suit

their lifestyle. There is nothing fair in that, nor is there any justice in the consequences such a social experiment will have on generations of children to come.”

In December, CNN/Opinion Research Corporation conducted a poll that said that 55 percent of Americans believe that same-sex marriages should not be recognized by law as valid. Forty-four percent said gay marriages should be legal.

Similar results were found in a Newsweek poll also conducted in December, according to an article on CNNPolitics.com. The article stated that, "Women and young people are more in favor of same-sex marriage than men and senior citizens," CNN Polling Director Keating Holland said. On the Brown University poll," Father Codega remarked, "I'm interested in the kinds of questions that were asked. I do believe a majority of Rhode Islanders are compassionate regarding relationships of gay couples. People need to be educated and aware what the gay marriage

agenda really wants to do with this issue," said Father Codega.

A statement from the Diocese of Providence, stated that public opinion polls are always somewhat subjective and open to various interpretations.

“Given the intense lobbying efforts by proponents of gay marriage, no one should be surprised by the findings of this particular [Brown University] poll,” the Diocese expressed. “While there is clearly a lot of work to be done, we will renew our efforts to explain the dignity of marriage as designed by God. We hope and pray that Rhode Island will reject fraudulent imitations of marriage and avoid the immoral social experiment promoted as ‘gay marriage.’”

I don't believe the RI poll by liberal Brown University. Also in California after a successful ad campaign more more than 40% of young voters voted in favor of prop 8. The problem is that the big lie one I heard even parroted on Rush Limbaugh's program when he cited liberal propaganda concerning brain studies without rebuking it. This isn't about equality or liberty or any of the other rallying cries of the "surface thinkers" on this issue. Homosexuality is at its core simply incorrect. It is not a feature like the color of ones skin and the rate of disease and disorder associated with this small population of people is not a coincidence.

The Marxists in our government schools, colleges, and universities are winning the indoctrination war.

Who ever controls the hearts and minds of the nation's children, wins the election in the next generation. The Marxists only need to be patient. They will soon have everything they have been working toward.

The pervert lobby in Massachusetts has desperately fought to keep homosexual “marriage” off of the ballot. This is because poll after poll here show that it would lose.I *firmly* believe that there’s not a state in the country where homosexual “marriage” could prevail in a statewide referendum.

Gay “marriage” is all about seeking validation of an abnormal lifestyle. It has nothing to do with “equality”—traditional, opposite-sex marriage, being available to gay and straight individuals alike, is perfectly equal. It has nothing to do with “liberty”—gays are 100% free to lead their lifestyle even with traditional marriage laws in place.

Exactly Julia. It is not about equality. Anyone that believes that it is are only proving they do not know how to think clearly but today’s youth especially many of our libertarian , liberal, and moderate “friends” are not very good at reasoning. What endorsing such a thing as gay marriage is simply defining normalcy down. Gay marriage is one more step down the path to disintegrating society, just as eliminating the stigma associated with single motherhood and sex before marriage and eliminating all negative connotations associated with deviant sexual practices by “norming” them did not eliminate the negative consequences rather instead they have been compounded and we will see that with “gay marriage”. There will be a greater incidence of causal homosexuality in otherwise heterosexual individuals especially among the children of single mothers, there will be more transmission of disease and there will be even more radical sexual peculiarities which will be lifted up as the bar is further lowered. Also those who dare speak out or those who attempt to disassociate themselves with homosexuality will be ostracized, intimidated and bullied. Say for example a young girl or young man rebuffs the unwanted sexual advances of a fellow student of the same sex at a public school. It is not unlikely in the future after gay marriage is accepted that they may be endanger of retaliation by school officials if they respond overly negatively to the open homosexual advances. They very well may end up being expelled or be required to take tolerance “training”. There are consequences to having great fictions written into law and the normalcy of homosexuality is not only a great fiction but a dangerous new beginning that will only compound the current problems we are having by the other great fictions the left have forced upon the whole of society in the name of good intentions and equality.

You are right. I am concerned that I see many otherwise intelligent people falling for some of the activist rhetoric. Part of it is because they simply have spent most of their recent lives being exposed to gay propaganda and a culture that has further normalized all forms of deviance no matter how destructive such deviance and destructive behavior is proven to be.

......better believe it. They are so liberal in RI they would vote for King Kong as long as he was pro-homo. And if you happened to say something like, “ Gee that candidate was a quite hairy” .... RI’ers would look at you with utter contempt.....like you were un-PC scum.

They’ve already taught them that all Truth is relative, except that which states “truth isn’t relative”..(this is incorrect), which is a contradiction in itself since “all truth is relative”. It is self defeating, but when you teach the majority of our population that lie (which has happened over the last 10-15 years) then anything goes..

Assuming that the polls are correct, 57% is barely critical mass for traditional values. Unless a restoration of moral values is granted to this country (that is, a return to moral innocence, which would require a miracle) we are sunk as a society.

This demonstrates yet again why this nation is finished. The lazy, vain "Millenial" Generation is the one who will usher in American Fascism.

The article stated that, "Women and young people are more in favor of same-sex marriage than men and senior citizens,

I know I will get flamed, no, nuked for saying this, but the advent of women getting the vote began sinking this nation early in the 20th century. Ladies, you're essential for civilization the world over and the glory of a man, but if the right for women to vote were suddenly revoked, we would see the most conservative government in place since the 50's. Poll after poll has shown that women sharply skew almost every race to the left: for the Democrat, for more liberal policies, for less constitutional govenment.

I'm sorry, but this is the plain, simple truth.

This demonstrates yet again why this nation is finished.

This nation is finished because too many conservative parents sent their children into the Marxist dominated government K=12 schools. They graduated and went on to college ill-prepared to defend their faith and our nation's values.

The lazy, vain "Millenial" Generation is the one who will usher in American Fascism.

It is their parents who ushered in this mess. It is the parents who sent their children into the government re-education camps.

I think what has really caused an increased schism is when men stopped being real men. When I mean real men, I mean men who have the desire to form families, defend them, build them up and honor their wives. Married women with children are much more conservative because they don’t need a Uncle Sam to play Daddy to their children. Men can change the world just by marrying a woman, loving her, and making her feel safe. I know with all the woman’s rights stuff saying such things are not popular but it is correct nonetheless. Women vote for liberal ideas much for the same reason weak men do because they are afraid, tired, and see no hope or faith in their current lives or in their fellow man.
