Obama transferred from Occidental College to Columbia University in 1981.
According to the New York Times, Obama "suggests in his book that his years in New York were a pivotal period: He ran three miles a day, buckled down to work and 'stopped getting high,' which he says he had started doing in high school.
Yet he declined repeated requests to talk about his New York years, release his Columbia transcript or identify even a single fellow student, co-worker, roommate or friend from those years."
Campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt told the newspaper in October 2007, "He doesn’t remember the names of a lot of people in his life."
Obama claimed to be a part of the Black Student Organization and anti-apartheid activities. But according to the New York Times, several well-known student leaders did not recall his involvement.
Fox News made contact with 400 of Obama's classmates. No one remembered him.
The Columbia University chapter in Obama's life remains blank, according to the New York Sun.
"The Obama campaign has refused to release his college transcript, despite an academic career that led him to Harvard Law School and, later, to a lecturing position at the University of Chicago," the Sun reported in September 2008.
"The shroud surrounding his experience at Columbia contrasts with that of other major party nominees since 2000, all whom have eventually released information about their college performance or seen it leaked to the public."
According to the New York Sun, a program from Columbia's 1983 commencement ceremony lists Obama as a graduate. University spokesman Brian Connolly confirmed that Obama graduated with a major in political science but without honors. Nonetheless, he was later admitted to Harvard Law School.

My bad. I wrote a few minutes ago that Obama attended Columbia U. on a foreign student scholarship. That was Occidental College, not Columbia.

What most people don’t realize is “news” is created...Press releases are sent out and they are printed without question. Newpapers (and even FOX) do surveys and then write a story about the results. An event occurs, media is notified by the organizers and the orginators/participant of the event are interviewed, pictures are posed and taken. etc etc etc all scripted by the organizers.
The left is VERY good at organizing these and at creating their own news....Ever notice how the “D” stand before all the cameras at a DC news event, State of Union, etc etc.THere are never a shortage of them ready to spot a paragraph prepared ahead of time by a staff or party member. They also know how to shout down the alternating message....hey get very loud and talk very fast over others.
Problem with conservatives is many of them expect the MSM to just show up without “being invited” and are not prepared to go in front of cameras when they are present....Many of them react, try thinking on the spot, instead of planning their actions or repeating a set of “talking points”. They are polite and take turns and aren’t pushy, and wouldn’t dream of telling a “spinned” story.
SO the moral of this story is.....

I know about that first-hand as I do hospital transcription, and I'll remark to my family and co-workers when I come across any amusing or odd little snippets like that.

It was a long time ago. Most of the professors are probably retired or dead. And records that old are buried in archives somewhere, not readily accessible because they were never computerized. He went by “Barry” back then, which is an unremarkable, unmemorable name. And the reality of many large urban universities is that students simply have no reason to get to know people in their classes. Even some students who are very involved in campus life may not really know anyone in their classes, though they have active friendships with students involved in their extracurricular activities. A lot of students are just focused off campus, with family, jobs, old friends in the neighborhood they grew up in and still live in, etc. In Obama’s case, it seems more likely that he was involved in off-campus political groups and/or off-campus jobs arranged for him by someone who was mentoring him, and trying to get him ready to get into a law school like Harvard. Hard to say why he doesn’t want to make public information about his Columbia years. Could be the radical nature of some off-campus groups he was involved in. Or could be that he had fairly prestigious off-campus jobs or internships that were arranged for him by a mentor because he was black, and that going into the details would show that a white student who had comparable credentials wouldn’t have been able to get those positions. Could be he was living with a girlfriend whose subsequent activities were such that news of the relationship would be wild tabloid fodder. Who knows. Maybe we’ll eventually find out, maybe we won’t. But I don’t buy into the conspiracy stuff, claiming he wasn’t even there, etc.

The one and only positive thing that I can say about Bill is that he always said that being president was the best job he ever had.

Obama went to the liberal arts part of Columbia... Columbia COllege. I dont think it has more than a few thousand students.
I find it inconceivable that no one would remember him. Something is definitely fishy.

Obama did not graduate from Columbia University, he graduated from Columbia College, a small division of Columbia that had only about 1800 students, none of whom remember seeing Obama in class. It is also interesting that William Ayres was residing just a block or two from Columbia College at the time. They could have known each other.
Also, didn’t Obama go to Pakistan during the time that he was supposed to be at Columbia College? I think that the College is a division of the university which allows you to write your own course work contract, like Evergreen in WA state. It is possible that Obama got college credit for studying in Pakistan.
