Poll: Majority unsure who speaks for the GOP Posted: 09:39 AM ET
From CNN Ticker Producer Alexander Mooney
WASHINGTON (CNN) As the Republican Party struggles to regain its footing following the November elections, a new survey shows that a majority of adult Americans sees no clear leader for the minority political party.
Even more problematic for the GOP is that one-third of Republicans hold an unfavorable view of their party, according to the USA Today/Gallup poll.
When it comes to naming a main person who speaks for the GOP, 52 percent of Americans were unable to do so.
Among those who did name a speaker for the GOP, 13 percent identified conservative talk-radio host Rush Limbaugh, while 10 percent named former Vice President Dick Cheney. Arizona Sen. John McCain and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich were each named by 6 percent of Americans in the poll.
Just 3 percent said former President George W. Bush is currently the most prominent Republican speaker, while Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, and House Minority Leader John Boehner were each named by 1 percent of participants in the survey.

USA Today Gallup Poll? Ha...
The GOP? Michael Steele.
Conservatives? Sarah Palin.
That’s laughable. CNN is obsessed with the conservatives losing power while their own ship is sinking.
I couldn’t name one either. There are people outside Washington and outside the Republican party who speak for conservatism, but the rest of them are a bunch of losers.
RUSH RUSH RUSH!!
Excellent summary and to the point.
Sarah Palin 2012
This is actually a good thing in my opinion. I think we need to remember that the states have the sovereignty. We need to focus on who speaks for our respective states first. If each state works on their OWN representation that is getting sent up to their respective legislatures and on their behalf in DC, we will have a better outcome. The cream will rise to the top. Right now there is too much corruption at every level. We have to clean it up one seat at a time in our own house first. By 2012 there will an obvious and truly representative person representing the party if we do our jobs at the state level right now and don’t lose our stomach for it by 2010.
CNN: “Quick, the GOP is starting to reunite behind conservatives, we’d better stir the RINO pot some more.”
Yeh, we’re really going to let CNN define us. We the People speak for the conservatives — there are many, they speak with one voice — and it is the voice of reason and common sense. We don’t need ONE leader, because we are not followers.
My Two Texas Senators are trying to just get along with moderates and democRATs and with the State Run Media.
There isn’t one leader right now. McConnell & Boehner aren’t “movement-type” people. McCain is too old and Romney & Palin have kept relatively low profiles thus far. Newt is the only guy who is consistently out there espousing conservatism, but it’s unclear what his political ambitions are at this point. He is probably weighing a run, but who knows.
That is because the state run media has tried to select the party’s spokespeople and only give air and print time to losers.
In any other universe, a McCain by any name would never be quoted again for anything political.
Jon Voight! ;-)
What is this.........a little agenda driven question?????
Principles are universal and we don’t need a ‘leader’ to follow.
We follow patriotism, honor, integrity, and the constitution.
WE speak for the GOP. Jim Rob for RNC.
Nobody speaks for the GOP or Conservatives
It’s the Liberals who are sheep and need a strong figure to tell them how to think and live their lives.
Conservatives don’t need anyone to speak or think for them, we can do that for ourselves
The Republicans have one definitive spokesman, Rush Limbaugh. And at present, the Republicans have just one viable Presidential candidate for 2012, Sarah Palin. Let me know if the people writing this story need anymore information.
