Poll: Majority unsure who speaks for the GOP Posted: 09:39 AM ET
From CNN Ticker Producer Alexander Mooney
WASHINGTON (CNN) As the Republican Party struggles to regain its footing following the November elections, a new survey shows that a majority of adult Americans sees no clear leader for the minority political party.
Even more problematic for the GOP is that one-third of Republicans hold an unfavorable view of their party, according to the USA Today/Gallup poll.
When it comes to naming a main person who speaks for the GOP, 52 percent of Americans were unable to do so.
Among those who did name a speaker for the GOP, 13 percent identified conservative talk-radio host Rush Limbaugh, while 10 percent named former Vice President Dick Cheney. Arizona Sen. John McCain and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich were each named by 6 percent of Americans in the poll.
Just 3 percent said former President George W. Bush is currently the most prominent Republican speaker, while Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, and House Minority Leader John Boehner were each named by 1 percent of participants in the survey.

Yes, TV made it so and the Internet just ups the familiarity. Who you’d want to have over for a BBQ 5 days a week is becoming the standard.
Ronnie understood politics is show business, but too many people want to overlook that. Both the right core principles and a compelling presence are what we should be looking for.
I’m gonna listen to the 1st GOPer who stops pissin and moanin about what Obama’s doing wrong and tells us exactly what he or she would do and will do to fix the country.
Perfectly put. Reagan played the part of President, perhaps better than anyone in the modern area. And, that's not a pejorative statement. It's a nod to Reagan's unparalleled ability to communicate and inspire the "every man".
Reagan understood the media and how to use it to his advantage and milk it for all it was worth. Even the liberal media. He knew how to control it and to get it to work for him rather than against him for the most part. He was a true master at communication and political saavy. We need another just as smart in those areas.
Without it, we're sunk again in 2012.
I really liked Guiliani and Thompson after they both dropped out. Guiliani was masterful in his media appearances as was Thompson, even Gingrich did well.
Of course, they are all either too old, or too damaged to run again, but we have to pick someone that can make the media inquisitors look as stupid as they really are.
Sarah Palin, Dick Cheney, and Liz Cheney speak for me!
There are two main problems that minorities have.
First and foremost they listen to the MSM and the democEAR party who brainwashes em all with BS propaganda.
Second, minorities by and large have their priorities all srewed up. This is in large part due to the first problem. Once minorities actually start to think for themselves, and actually start to do the things that they know will really help them and their situation to turn around - which has more to do with following true conservative principles and values - they will begin to see the great changes in their own lives and that of their families for the better.
Feel free. I have no idea what possible use that would serve of course; but if it makes you feel better, more power to you.
I think perhaps you are putting too much stock in approval ratings. But if you really are concerned about such things, note what happened to Dick Cheney's poll numbers when he spoke out against the administration's policies. According to Pew, his favorables went up 8 points from January to May.
Cheney's negatives are still about 55%. Nevertheless -- and this is the important point -- he has been effective. He forced the democrats to deal with the issues he raised about the War on Terror. Even Obama's supporters in the press have had to admit that Cheney won the debate.
Limbaugh, regardless of his approval ratings, is effective at communicating ideas that can help the Republicans win. If the party can find someone else who is both likable and effective, then more power to them.
Keep in mind, however, that anyone who is effective at communicating conservative ideas will soon earn high negatives among a large segment of the population.
I am not proposing that Limbaugh run for office. (He would not want to take the pay cut.) I am proposing that the Republicans listen to his ideas and pay attention to the way he advances those ideas.
I like Palin, but she’s a woman and she won’t win. People just don’t like women (sorry). I have a feeling she’s going to be pushed on us like McCain was just because she’s unelectable.
Using irony isn’t one of your strong points, is it?
I can see from your thinly disguised racism that you are a sorry example of a human being.
Joke it up, chuckles. I hope it makes you feel better. If not it’s a waste; because to regular folks it makes you look small, petty, and really rather objectionable.
One last item.
How do you justify your claim of someone not being able to speak for “a subset of humanity” while considering yourself somehow able to speak for “regular folks”?
Personally, I don’t think you’re qualified.
Most “regular folks” wouldn’t confuse irony with racism.
The other two-thirds are idiots.
