I don't understand this whining about the supposed danger of smaller cars. Have you stopped to wonder what a "fender bender" means on a frickin' motorcycle?

Small, light cars don't have to be dangerous, any more than 3-ton trucks are automatically "safe" just because of their mass. It's a matter of engineering.

My father-in-law was in a horrible head-on collision with a big delivery box truck. He was driving a Prius (and no, he's not a liberal - he's a red-meat conservative retired Army Airborne vet). The Prius, though obviously totalled, protected him exceptionally well and his worst injury was a fractured sternum from the impact with the airbag and steering column. I saw the wreckage, and the structural integrity of that car's passenger compartment is just incredible.

Contrary to popular perception, it’s all about structural engineering.

A large car whose structure can be compared to an egg-shell for the passenger compartment, with the bulk of the mass like a lead weight behind it, isn’t going to do too well in a head-on collision. The momentum of the extra mass at the rear is going to ensure the crushing of the occupants, too. Proper weight distribution, with advanced crumple zones will go far more in protecting the occupants than just adding mass to the vehicle.

Motorcycles are dangerous on the street too. More dangerous than micro cars even. If you want to drive a micro car go ahead. This is supposed to be a free country. Most people on this thread are bashing micro cars because they foresee a day when they will be government mandated, to “protect the environment”.

This country is becoming less free all the time. It's not so hard for us to imagine a day when we will have to get a special permit to buy a pickup truck, and have to pay thousands in carbon tax credits a year just to drive it.By all means drive your micro mini car. More power too you. No one is forcing you to drive a big car.
