In the Medieval World, Jews were banned from owning land and couldn’t be part of the military aristocracy or clergy (obviously since the Clergy were Christian). But Christians were banned from loaning money at interest.
So to survive, Jews became involved in money-lending, banking, commerce, medicine, sciences, and other professions to survive. Some of the greatest thinkers of the period were Jews.
