Crime fears spur women began to pack heat

LAKE WORTH, Fla. -- Some businesswomen who work in a Florida area hit hard with crime are arming themselves and taking matters into their own hands.

Lake Worth business owner Mayra Ramirez has been practicing at the Palm Beach Shooting Range in Lake Worth for months.

"I was always against guns but from watching the news and seeing so many things happen, I figured it was time to get one," Ramirez said.

Ramirez is arming herself because she's fed up with the crime around her business. A week ago a man was shot just steps away from her storefront.

"At the beginning, firing a gun was terrifying," she said. "When I first started I couldn't stop shaking. But after your first few times, you look forward to coming in."

A few doors down from Ramirez's store, coffeehouse owner Marilin Garcia is also arming herself for the first time.

"You can protect yourself just being alert and in case you see danger, it's there for you to use," Garcia said.

Gun shop sales show tens of thousands of Florida women are now carrying a pistol.

"They are looking to protect themselves and keep the criminal at bay," said Jerry McClellan, an employee of the Pam Beach Shooting Range. "They come in here, take a lesson and we start them out with something fun. Then we move them up to something they will carry for self defense."

Ramirez's gun of choice is a .38 special.

It's called the Pink Lady, and by the looks of the bullet hole in the target, you can see she's on the mark.

"Don't mess with females," Ramirez says

It’s like the 80s again. But without the awesome president or that prosperity thing.

As I've mentioned to others here before. I carry a Beretta Tomcat .32cal loaded with Glaser Safeties ...with an extra magazine .... my instructor says you don’t get into a shooting match and you don’t engage over ten feet ...

“my instructor says you don’t get into a shooting match and you don’t engage over ten feet ...”

Eh.. OK. I’d recommend being deadly up to 50 feet away, drawing double action with the first shot in center mass.

Why so far away? Fifty feet? That’s like getting into a gun fight. I can see it if you’re like in a mall and someone with a gun opens up and you’re the only one armed I can see it, but personal defense to me is closer. Instructor said, CHP said average distance they’ve had shooting was 9-12 feet.

It’s true that the average engagement distance is ~10 feet, but your mall example is exactly why I say up to 50. I tend to use a restaurant or gas station as the example, but the premise is the same.

With my CCW gun(which can vary)I practice at 21 ft.(7 yards). Average distance in a gun fight is about 3 or 4 yards. 7 gives a nice distance to practice. Keep ‘em in the black at 21 ft. and you will do even better at 10!:)

Most pistol quals for cops and military have you qualify from 25 yards and then 15 yards and then 10 and then 7 and then 3 yards. Using 50 rounds all thru the qualification course. With mag changes or reloads for a revolver during the course.

I have to get a .22 pistol to practice with. I can’t see using up what .32 stuff I have since I can’t find it anymore. At fifty feet the .32 is pretty flat.

Hehe, good luck. .22 is impossible to find here in east Texas. Personally I carry a 9mm and can still find ammo at the local/private gun shops.

You should shoot an attakcer at the maximum possible range. Whatever the maximum range is that you can reliably hit the target that is what you should be shooting at. At 10 ft. w/ a .32 there's a good possibility you are going to be fighting the perp for your gun even if you shoot him.

If I were younger I would love to find someone to bump .357’s with.

I have said this before. Every woman should know how to shoot. Guys train your daughters how to handle a rifle/pistol/shotgun.

An armed woman is a rapists greatest nightmare.

Be not afraid of any man,
No matter what his size.
When danger threatens,
Call on me, and I will equalize.

This used to be on the trigger guard of Colt revolvers.

I'm not a chick, and hotness is certainly questionable.

Yes, I know what you meant... and yes, I agree.

Get into reloading, save your empties, and collect everyone else’s empties. Never know when you’ll want to try a different caliber weapon. It’s fun and relaxing. Been doing it since the sixties. Get the wife and kids involved. Just make sure you check to see that each round gets a charge (squibs can be deadly).
