Welcome ... I honestly wonder if there’s propaganda mixed in.
Some reports are saying the iranianthugmachine has caught on to the new technology and are posting fake updates to catch those in Iran who post and pass on. Prayers.

If true, thank God the foreign embassies are open and taking in the wounded. That takes it away from being an “internal conflict,” and brings in a direct international involment that was totally unpredictable last week. God does work in His mysterious and miraculous ways.

This is so hopeful and telling ... Iranian soccer team at an away match, and stunningly reported by the NTTimes:

####

Update | 5:05 p.m.

Our day began with news of six Iranian soccer players wearing green wristbands in support of the opposition movement during a vital match for the national team in South Korea. After a 1-1 draw in that match, Iran could only qualify for the 2010 World Cup finals if either Saudi Arabia or North Korea lost when those two nations met later on Wednesday in Riyadh.

That match has now ended in a 0-0 draw that was more or less in the best interest of both Saudi Arabia and North Korea, which means that Iran’s national soccer team has been eliminated from the World Cup.

Jon Snow of Britain’s Channel 4 News pointed out that “millions of Iranians watching a vital World Cup match saw their team captain and several other players turn out wearing green wristbands — a potent show of support for the opposition.”

Of course, that’s not the biggest issue facing Iran at the moment, but members of the Iranian soccer team appeared to make themselves part of the political protests in their home country by donning green wristbands and undershirts during Wednesday’s game.

The players — anywhere between five and eight, depending on which article you read — were told to remove the offending items at halftime, but photos of the team were showing up just a couple hours later in Tehran, in the hands of the pro-democracy protesters marching in support of opposition candidate Mir-Hossein Mousavi.

“The history of sport is littered with symbolic political gestures, but few have been as brave as the stand taken by some players on Iran’s national soccer team,” Time’s Glen Levy writes. “The match was broadcast live on Iranian state television with millions in the soccer-mad nation tuning in. Both the players and coaching staff surely knew that their protest would be big news in Iran.”

In the Israeli paper Haaretz, not usually a hotbed of pro-Iranian sentiment, Bradley Burston cheers the team’s bravery. “When the national soccer team, the sporting love of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s life, took the field in Seoul, and when Iranian state television showed the team captain and most of the squad wearing wrist and arm bands in the green of the reformists, the players knew that there was much more at stake — at risk — for them personally, than whether they would defeat South Korea and advance to a place in the World Cup,” Burton writes.

“But the team had already clinched a victory of momentous proportion. They are quiet lions. They are, in every sense of the word, champions. I never thought I’d be rooting for Iran. But I’m pulling for them now, hard as I can.”

God bless those brave young men. Can they ever go home ?
