South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford's mistress is a 43-year-old employee of an international agriculture company who speaks several languages and lives in an upscale apartment building in Buenos Aires, Argentina, local media there are reporting.
Though details are sparse, Terra Noticias reported Thursday that the woman's name is Maria Belen Shapur and she works for the international agribusiness firm Bunge y Born.
The newspaper, along with Buenos Aires Continental Radio, reported that she lives next to the Buenos Aires Zoo in a 14-story building. A witness described her as a beautiful brunette with big eyes who plays tennis on a nearby lawn and runs every morning in her neighborhood.
The witness told the radio station that Sanford arrived at the complex, alone, with a small sports bag last week and asked to go inside the building.
Sanford admitted Wednesday to having an affair over the last year and covering up a secret trip to visit his mistress last week. The admission rocked the South Carolina political scene and has also captured the attention of the Buenos Aires media, as the governor provided few details about his lover.
Terra Noticias reported that Belen speaks English, Portuguese and Chinese, and that the company she supposedly works for is massive, with 25,000 employees in more than 30 countries, including 1,000 in Argentina, according to a profile on the Bunge Limited Web site.

Interesting, but I don’t know how this woman would be tied to Spain... Since Brazil was colonialized by Portuguese, I think the connection a fellow FReeper made to Portuguese cultured parts of India make sense. Or the name is from her former husband.

I haven’t been an ardent defender of Sanford. I have tried to keep the facts straight and I didn’t jump to conclusions when the news of him being missing first came out.
I doubt she would have married him had she known that he would cheat on her one day (however, I don’t know their personal business and could be wrong).
I'm happy for you, that you were strong enough to overcome your desires and have worked things out in your marriage.
It's rare to find a man who will openly discuss this issue from a man's point of view.
I'm interested to know, how does this happen that you fall in love with someone else? Is it that you are in a situation where you are together a lot - as at work? Does the other woman say or act in much different ways than your wife?
It happens so much in our society & would be a big help to us women, if we knew ahead of time what the answer is, so it does not happen to the people we know & love.
Actually, I’m going to change that statment. I bet she would have still married him knowing he would cheat on her one day, because I guarantee you she wouldn’t trade those boys for anything!
He shouldn’t have cheated on his wife. It was wrong. He also set a horrible example for his 4 boys.
