For a while, the weirdness exercised a global fascination. The prestigious Oxford Union invited him to address their members, and Michael Jackson flew in to Britain wearing his trademark surgical mask, a wise move considering the country was then in the grip of Mad Cow Disease. On an official tour of Blenheim Palace, which must have been a bit of a comedown after Neverland, they rolled out the red carpet, but he insisted it be heavily disinfected, and it squelched under his crutch. Crutch, not crotch. Due to some domestic mishap, he was grabbing the former rather than the latter. At Oxford, he called on the world to adopt his Childrens Bill of Rights, including the right to be thought adorable and the right to be listened to without having to be interesting. The right to a $30 million out-of-court settlement, won by a 13-year old former playmate of his, was not mentioned.
Michael also revealed the pain of his own lost childhood, as tears rolled down his cheek - or whoevers cheek it was originally. It was a constant motif in his work. Have you seen my childhood? he sang in Childhood, the theme song from Free Willy. (Free Willy, by the way, is a motion picture and not another demand from his Bill of Rights.)

MJ was a very devious pervert using his "child-like" persona to lure children into his bed. Disgusting!
Michael Jackson is having his body recycled as a grocery bag. His will states he wants to remain white, plastic and a danger to small children.
Know ye not that we shall judge angels? how much more things that pertain to this life?"
Since I know as much about you as you know about Michael Jackson, you must also be a homosexual child molester. You’re the disgusting pervert! Freak.
Thank you for saying that. A little understanding goes a long way for him. Through a whole lifetime of suffering he became the best in music and choreography the world has seen.
I have never seen his videos. Have peeked today to see what the fuss is about. I assure you he is no where the best musician or choreographer the world has ever seen.
Steyn says it all, in his inimitable and enviable fashion.
That is plainly incorrect. Newfreep knows volumes more about Jackson than you could ever know about Newfreep, and for easily demonstrable reasons. Jackson was one of the most famous men who ever lived, he was prosecuted and had sworn testimony given about him in court, he was deposed on camera on several occasions under oath, he appeared on television on numerous occasions and spoke for himself in interviews, and legions of investigative journalists, other writers, and television journalists have spent probably 1000 man-years writing about or reporting on him.
Can the same be said for Newfreep?
Despite Jackson’s great fame, not everything about him is known. Much more is about to be learned now that his constitutional protections have expired with his death. It might be prudent for fans like yourself to prepare for an avalanche of very negative revelations in the months ahead.
The hatred surprises you? The freak molested little boys.
Interesting article by Mark Steyn. Thanks for posting.
How do you defend MJ buying the silence of one little boy for $22 million?
What about the life long damage MJ caused these children and their families?
How do you defend his buying "his" 3 kids? God help those innocent children!
No doubt you believe OJ was innocent, too.
You and the other MJ/OJ defenders are sick to condone such disgusting behaviour...
For once my slow typing paid off. :-)
Like the McMartin case, the press and late night comedy hosts completely convicted Jackson before, after and during the trial and I have to say I bought the whole thing myself until I decided to pay attention. Living in L.A. and working in TV, my friends and I were awash in Jackson's life during this period, but it wasn't till I cast a show I was producing with one of his dancers from the "Bad" and "Dangerous" tours, that I found out what an amazing soul he was.
If you care, I'm happy to discuss in FReep mail, but don't be so quick to think you know what you're talking about.
He said some boys slept in his bed during sleep-overs, he didn't say sex of any kind was involved. That's your conclusion because you can't imagine any other scenario, but hundreds of kids stayed at his house, slept in his room, were interviewed extensively and all of them, but two, testified it was completely innocent.
It wasn't $22 million that bought the dentist off, it turned out to be closer to a million and a half. He figured it was cheaper and less destructive than a court fight. And the rest of your conviction-by-media facts aren't worth bothering with because you seem dedicated to your position, but if you're capable of putting aside all your press-driven outrage, try to think of everything you think you know and look at the same "facts" with Jackson being innocent.
I believe the people who actually know him who say he's completely non-sexual in person, child-like and would never do anything to harm a child. Ever. There wasn't a single person involved in "exposing" the stuff you mentioned that wasn't looking for a payday from jackson and that includes the flight crew who started the "Jesus Juice" nonsense.
You need a new name.
That Jackson may have been a good soul who displayed enormous generosity to dancers from his tours, and many other to boot, doesn’t surprise me in the least, nor are such attributes in the least incompatible with the psychopathology of a typical child molester.
When I noted that an avalanche of revelations are likely to come out now that Jackson has died, I meant that evidence from a whole host of new accusers, and others close to him who may have remained silent about what they know, may be presented soon, since they no longer need to fear the heavy hand of his legal team and the expensive litigation that comes with it.
If the evidence is not forthcoming, then you may consider yourself vindicated, and MJ proven as pure as the driven snow.
Given his documented extreme weirdness, however, I think it would be wise to wait a few months before declaring Jackson a saint.
Wow - you’re either extremely gullible or in a total state of denial. I suggest therapy for you...good luck!
As does at least half of what is left of our country...
I’m sure Steyn knows this. ;) I think he is making fun of the absurdity of the mask. Exactly what did MJ think his mask protected him from?
I too have always enjoyed Mark's candor and insight into what's going on in society and politics. Really enjoy listening to him weekly on the Michael Medved radio show.
But I agree that this piece was way too Hateful and beneath his usual fair (and humorous) observations. Not even a glimmer of "positive" concerning a troubled entertainer who, though misunderstood, was never a Hater. And as far as I know, never convicted of of any "misdoing".
An Odd Duck, yes. But I believe his contributions to the entertainment world are quite worthy of note.
Mark, leave the "beatings" for people that really deserve it. There's a lot out there to choose from.
