A coup does not require the full support of the full military. I think it would be difficult, however, for a portion of the US military to position and prepare for such an act without it being known to others. The repeal of posse comitatus does make it a bit less difficult to move troops around.
Here’s to the hope that General Petraus crosses the Rubicon. I know him. He’s an honorable and excellent man. A real American patriot and hero... and not born in Kenya.

The USMC troops won’t support a coup. However, the officer corps is alterable. Remember Clinton purged the officer corps of the army, navy and AF pretty thoroughly which contributed mightily to our getting bogged down so long in Iraq. The junior officers filtering up finally pulled us out of the doldrums there. The surge helped but it was the new leadership that did it. A neutered officer corps could probably not lead the marines into something unconstitutional but they can keep them from interfering. Besides, chances are that the military would be deeply involved in a coup before the troops understand what is going on.
Not to mention wealthy enough (and well-connected).
Doesn’t sound like you’re giving the troops much credit for being able to figure a few things out. Such as, who those “political” generals are, and to take what they say with a grain of salt.
One thing I will grant, though, is the difficulty that deployed troops will have in doing anything to help us. It’s not like they can just fly themselves back here whenever they want to.
Probably the best single goal for conservatives in the next three years is to get voting up to the standards of other western democracies. Seriously, lose the voting machines and get people to count the votes by hand with party scrutineers watching, the way it’s done in Canada and the UK. Whatever else you may think of us, we don’t have these problems with vote rigging (at least not on this scale).

Clinton purged the officer corps of the services. Hussein can and probably will do the same. Clinton need an excuse and got it in "Tailhook." Hussein may not feel he needs an excuse, or one can be manufactured.
Ordered out into the community to back up Obama's tame police and Brownshirts in a hunt for guns, the cops having orders to shoot-to-kill any resistance, I would imagine the troops would comply if their officers went along.
Remember what happened at Goliad, when orders repugnant to the laws of war and the law of nations were handed down.
The senior officers, who were career, professional military (some of them with European service during the Napoleonic Wars) indignantly refused to carry out the orders, but somewhere a junior officer was found to give the necessary orders, and the troops duly massacred Fannin's disarmed and surrendered Texians.

Our guy Mc Cain would have brought us nationalized health care and foremost, amnesty. Then it would all be the same as with Hussein, just a year or two later in coming. Amnesty will give us a permanent SD(Social Democrat) presidency and 90% congress. Everything else follows just as Hussein would like except that it might not be Barack Hussein leading it.

I remember a huge RIF instigated by Poppy Bush and "Big Dick" Cheney that put a troopie named Tim McVeigh on the street.
I also remember that that RIF was planned -- along with the mothballing of numerous ships and aircraft -- and the disbandment of the heavy European corps, by Poppy so that he could cut a big tax-cut check for his Yalie pals back on Park Avenue. And that the Gulf War was a huge annoyance and distraction, and forced him and "Big Dick" to postpone the big drawdown. Didn't stop "Big Dick" from ordering Grumman to cut up the jigs and dies for the F-14, though. Show them who's boss -- no more F-14's!
Bet there are a few carrier admirals around now who'd like to have that one back.
I remember all that. The huge "peace dividend" was Poppy's idea.
But I also know that, after Poppy cut back NASA's space program, that Slick came in there and gutted the Shuttle's program personnel -- including most of their range-safety people, which led directly to the Columbia accident. Slick raped the DoD stores and training budgets, too.
I also remember that Bush 43, after the loss of Columbia, did a further 15% carve-out of Shuttle program budget funds, and dedicated it to a classified Air Force program that would use the Shuttle on some missions. The carve-out was Sean O'Keefe's work -- he was the green-eyeshade jockey that Dubya appointed to head NASA, coming over from OMB to do his "magic" at NASA -- and it was announced three months to the day after the Columbia accident. All of that, on top of Slick's defalcations.
But I didn't hear that Slick also did a --what, political? or just warm bodies? -- "purge" of the Armed Services' officer corps.

— the USSC’s 25Jun05 Kelo v New England [?] to allow theft and larceny under the guise of imminent domain.
— the USSC’s refusal to hear cases on Pr Obama’s eligibility.
— the USSC’s refusal to hear the cases of the GM/Chrysler bondholders; their bonds ARE backed by a legal document ans as such ARE enforceable under contract-law... the US Government OBVIOUSLY went around those policies.
— the Congress’s refusal to read, or even discuss the TARP bill.
— the Congress’s passing of the TARP bill in spite of massive constituent response in the negative.
— the Representative’s passing of the Cap And Trade bill in spite of massive constituent response in the negative.
— the Ex. branch’s refusal to operate in the promised transparent manner.
— Specifically: Rep. John Murtha; there is a good argument that his condemnation of the marines in time of war w/o trial; the demoralizing of troops by said action; and his position legitimizing the enemy’s use of fighting w/o uniforms (violation of the Hague conventions, IIRC) are obviously giving aid and comfort to the enemy.
— Pr Obama’s consistent appointments & nominations, in spite of his “most ethical admin.” comments, of people that are obviously corrupt. (Sec. of Treasury, Bill Richardson!...)
— The DHS’s leaked report on right-wing terrorism; yes it was retracted, but nothing significant ever came of it.
— The Obama Admin’s alleged heavy-handed tactics in dealing with the Execs of those car companies, of which Pr Obama was personally present and condoning.
— The was the banks were forced to take bailout monies.
So, my question is: how much trampling of the US Constitution is required before we are to defend it as we are sworn to do? (Just ONE amendment, the one guaranteeing equal protection of the law, is obviously being violated in some way by ALL of the listed points... there are more violations than just that, of course.)
Why did we let the USSC tell us that it’s ok for the government to take someone’s private property and then turn it over to another private entity? That means that someone with enough governmental pull could say “I want this guy’s land...” and poof you don’t have a home anymore. (Or any other private property which they might covet, like the resources secured by the backing legal document of bonds.)
Why do we let the Justice dept. sweep the allegations of massive multi-state voter-registration fraud dissipate into nothing?
We are already trapped, IMO. It is, in my opinion, time to fight back. I have been wondering, those of you who are active duty (thank you) or know active duty personnel, what is the mood since the new CIC took over? Does anyone notice he has stopped saluting?
