North Korean ship 'turned around'
BBC News ^ | July 1, 2009

A North Korean ship being tracked by the United States Navy on suspicion of transporting weapons to Burma has turned around, US officials have said. They said they did not know where the ship was now heading, but South Korean media said it was going home.

The UN passed a tough sanctions resolution, Number 1874, allowing for inspections of air, ship and land shipments in and out of North Korea. The resolution followed North Korea's nuclear and missile tests in May. The Kang Nam 1 ship set sail from North Korea on 17 June and appeared to be bound for Burma, as US ships followed it down the coast of China. Sanctions working?

It is the first vessel monitored under sanctions that ban the regime from selling arms and nuclear-related material. It has been described as a known weapons trader. Burma denied any connection with it.

After sailing southwards past China, the Kong Nam apparently turned around and headed back up north.

One official said it was just south of Hong Kong on Tuesday. Others noted it had started travelling very slowly, perhaps to conserve fuel. "We've no idea where it's going," the official said. "The US didn't do anything to make it turn around."...

Let's see a show of hands. Does anyone think this ship turned around because of something the UN did?

Obviously they’ve come to accept that Obama is indeed a God. The force of his Obamaness has made them see the error of their ways. Kim Jing Il will report to the Whitehouse immediately to sing Kumbaya and share hot dogs.

One of the crew must have left the stove on.

If the UN was a person, it couldn’t find the restroom.

If anything turned this NK hulk around, it was the USN.

Maybe just a trial run to track and record our response times, techniques, patterns and maybe even the ROE. The ship was probably full of NK spooks with signals gear.

Or maybe it was that Minuteman III missile we launched from California Monday.

Actually, I’ve long suspected that both this ship and the missile launches are just a ruse to provoke us into a response.

What ever we do can be spun in his favor. If we don’t do any thing it can be portrayed that we’re cowards and backed down. If we do board an empty ship or shoot down a test missile he’ll play us as the bad guys trying to provoke a war.

He’s playing us and we are not the audience. It’s other third world counties.

Possibly. I think they were seeing what we were going to do. What I believe they will do now is launch the missile they want to test towards Hawaii on the 4th of July as a big old F**k You. This way they still project some power.

If the Navy was under the Bush administration I would say yes. However with Obama in charge I doubt he would do anything but make a show.

They will be launching missiles on or around July 4th, but they won’t be long range missiles. It takes them 1-2 weeks to assemble and fuel their long range rockets and they don’t have one on a pad right now. Commercial sat imagery can spot those missiles on the pads these days.

“Maybe just a trial run...”

Yeah, I think they just wanted to see what we would do before risking an actual shipment of arms. The answer? Nothing. Now they are just going back to North Korea to load up and continue business as usual.
