Let other capitals go all weak-kneed when President Obama visits. Moscow has greeted Mr. Obama, who on Tuesday night concluded a two-day Russian-American summit meeting, as if he were just another dignitary passing through. Crowds did not clamor for a glimpse of him. Headlines offered only glancing or flippant notice of his activities. Television programming was uninterrupted; devotees of the Russian Judge Judy had nothing to fear. Even many students and alumni of the Western-oriented business school where Mr. Obama gave the graduation address on Tuesday seemed merely respectful, but hardly enthralled. “We don’t really understand why Obama is such a star,” said Kirill Zagorodnov, 25, one of the graduates. “It’s a question of trust, how he behaves, how he positions himself, that typical charisma, which in Russia is often parodied. Russians really are not accustomed to it. It is like he is trying to manipulate the public.” ... Some Obama aides said they were struck by the low-key reception here, especially when compared with the outpouring on some of his other foreign trips. Even Michelle Obama, who typically enjoys admiring coverage in the local news media when she travels, has not had her every move chronicled here.

Putin respects and relates more with men like Bush and Cheney and men like Todd Palin. And would want to go on a hunting expedition with Sarah Palin, knowing she was more than able to outshine him. Obama is closer to a vegetarian...NOT a hunter.
However, Michelle brought glamor to Russia.

To me, Ogabe’s lower than a gob of spit on the sidewalk, but because of his radicalism, anti-Americanism and his transparent lack of ability, not his race. To the Russians, Ogabe’s just a member of an inferior race. He could be Jesus, the Buddha, Muhammad and Vishnu rolled into one, and the Russians would see him as a jacked-up n****r.

Can’t be said about Michelle.
I went to Russia in 1995, visiting a friend who was working there. She said Russians were very racist. They made fun of blacks from Africa who came to Russia for military training and such. That could explain part of their cool reception toward a Kenyan.
Also, as to Michelle bringing glamour to Russia, that would be like bringing coals to Newcastle, to use a very dated phrase. Russian women love looking beautiful, with nice hair, nails, slim figures, pretty dresses. Take the subway on a Friday evening, as the couples are heading out for their dates, and you will see more young, classy, lovely ladies than have been seen here in the U.S. in decades. Unfortunately, I don’t remember the young men being in the same league as their female companions.
The men are old-school macho chauvinists, largely. My friend saw many business meals where they end up drinking a lot, and you’d better keep up, or you are wimpy and unsociable. I can’t see Obama doing that. On the other hand, he does smoke, and so do they. That could help him a little.
Bingo. Russians like their leaders to be strong, masculine, decisive and authoritative. Obama displays none of these qualities.
Plus, hasn't he pretty much holed up in his hotel room because he's been "tired" for much of the trip? That's a way to win respect from the Russkies!
Sigh... At first I feared Obama. Now I'm just embarrassed by him. He's so in over his head.
The important question is: Are the kids having fun?! /sarc
As always, one standard exists for the international left outside Russia and quite another standard exists within Russia.
