TEGUCIGALPA (Reuters) - The Honduran armed forces chief who ousted President Manuel Zelaya said the decision to throw him out of the country was made by "the state" to save lives, because violence would have erupted had he remained.
General Romeo Vasquez Velasquez, leader of the joint chiefs of staff, told Reuters it was a difficult decision for him to topple Zelaya on June 28, because the two were friends.
But he said he was following orders from the Supreme Court and Congress, which have accused Zelaya of violating the constitution by trying to lift presidential term limits.
"The outside world sees us as bad guys but inside the country we are the ones who saved democracy. ... The best judge we will have is history," Vasquez Velasquez said in an interview at his office at the joint chiefs headquarters.
"We did it out of duty and for love of country because democracy was at risk," he said.

The Supreme Court of that nation ruled against it (properly so) and the President was planning to use the Executive Branch to implement it anyway. That's when the Supreme Court and a majority of the legislature called for the military's assistance...and they gave it, in support of the Hionduras constitution which Zelaya was attempting to subvert.
And so the telling thing about what happened in Honduras is this: EVERY Marxist in the Western Hemisphere is against it, including the Marxist Obama who is arm-and-arm with his marxist friends, Chavez and Castro on this.
That tells you that what the Honduras military did at the request of its Supreme Court and w/support from its legislature was correct, and avoided a move by Marxists to circumvent the Honduran constitution and entrench marxism in Honduras.
Bravo for the Honduras Supreme Court and military...and down with Obama's marxist dogma, policies, and ideology!

THE AUDACITY OF TRUTH ABOUT BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA'S UPBRINGING
Zelaya tried to change the Constitution, which the Constitution of Honduras states makes him a rogue and is an automatic expulsion from office.
The Military in Honduras followed their Constitution.
Does the Military in the USofA have the same ability and willingness to save the US Constitution from a Usurper?
No bias at all in the headline.
This business in Honduras is a good example of where Obama could have at least for the sake of American values have shut his trap.
The author uses an ironic and disbelieving tone that is designed to foster “disbelief” among readers as to the veracity of the claims that Zelaya was in fact trying to commit a coup when he was ousted and thrown out of Hondorus.
With this event, he is again showing exactly what he is all about.
THE AUDACITY OF TRUTH ABOUT BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA'S CIRCLE OF FRIENDS
It WAS NOT a coup you babbling jackasses!
A telling comment is that this general was in fact a friend to the former President and usurper...but did his duty anyway.
Of course it wasn’t...but that’s Reuters bias showing through. Just the same, the meat of the story makes clear that is was a constitutional act to preserve the Honduran constitution from a usurper who was the one truly attempting the coup.
And anyone paying attention to what was really going on like here at FR and not just listening to the MSM.
Against all enemies, foreign and domestic BUMP!
a coup is the sudden, unconstitutional deposition of a legitimate government.
This was NOT unconstitutional. Force was used because the courts ordered it, as the so called president would not relent.
No matter the definition I think we know the implications of the left.
Roberto Micheletti and all who were behind this saving of Honduras should just remind Zelaya, Obama, Chaveza nd the rest that, “we won!”
Hey, it was good enough for the Bama.
Technically, it was a coup, by the same definition of coup (sudden appropriation of leadership or power) that the Democrat takeover of Congress in 2006 was a coup.
It was NOT, however, a coup d'etat, because there was no force applied to change the government. The former president simply lost his position (automatically, according to the Honduran Constitution) due to his actions. That loss of position happened before the military acted.
There was no use of force against the former President, because at the time of the arrest he was no longer President. Even though both the Court and the Legislature supported the action of the military, that military action was not used to overthrow the government; it was simply following government orders, and was acting against a criminal who just coincidentally happened to be the former president before his own crimes voided any claim he might have to the office he formerly held.
Amen to that...and spot on target.
BTTT
“Constitution? We don’ need no stinkin’ constitution!”
—Zelaya (and Obama)
Wrongo. Not when the force is ordered by the supreme court and congress, in defense of the constitution against a rogue el presidente who went outside of the constitution, trying to use a bogus “referendum” to have himself made presidente para vida, like his pals Hugo and Fidel.
The only “coup” was the failed coup attempt by the rogue Zelaya.
If an American president refused to step down after his term was up and he had to be forcibly ejected from the Whitehouse, that ejection would not be a “coup.”
Well said.
